Smitteken
Well, my yellow lab libby is currently in heat. So I keep her kenneled up unless I'm with her. Since I had places to go on sunday she was kenneled up most of the day into the evening. When we got home there is another dog in her kennel with her. Apparently he ripped some of the chain link apart and crawled in. Luckily it was a lab. And a pretty well behaved one. So I called the police and they came and got him. I just got off of the phone with the police chief and he gave me the guys name who the dog belongs too. The way I feel is I did my part to keep my dog contained while she is in heat, this guy lets his dog roam around tear up my kennel and possibly impregnate my dog. I think he should be responsible for damage and for vet bills if my dog is pregnant. But the police in my town act like its no big deal. If the dog is registered its less of a big deal but I didn't plan on breeding her this go round and its going to be a huge pain in my side. Tominator
Re: Should I press charges? I don't think it's a crime unless there's leash laws in your area. It's certainly a civil matter that I would pursue with the other owner. Sounds to me as if you held up your "reasonable man" duty.
wtnhunt
Re: Should I press charges? Dont think I would press charges, even if I could here, which would not be likely. Like Chris suggested, might discuss it with the owner of the other dog.
Turkeygirl
Re: Should I press charges? Yeah, I wouldn't necessarily press charges but maybe talk to the dog owner - ask him to contribute to vet bills or something if the dog is pregnant...and tell him to keep is dog tied up. Smitteken
Re: Should I press charges? There is a leash law in my town. And I do plan on contacting the owner. I guess I'm banking on him not cooperating. The police didn't have the guys phone number but they gave me his address. He lives about six blocks from me. Shaun_300
Re: Should I press charges? I don't think I'd go as far as pressing charges. As stated above, have a talk with the owner of the other dog and see if he'll pay half of the vet bills if Libby is actually pregnant. Valkrie1357
Re: Should I press charges? Might also ask him to pay for repairs to the Kennel. Other than that, you are probably on your own!
Randy
Re: Should I press charges? I had the same exact same thing happen to my dog a few years back. I think it's "doggie rape"!! My lab had 9 pups and I asked the guy who's lab knocked her up about getting papers from him and he said he wanted a stud fee then!! The nerve!!! Needless to say I sold awsome pups for only $100 cause he wasn't getting anything!!
coles
Re: Should I press charges? i dont think so. we have had a Chow Chow climb the 6' chain link fence kennel when my lab was in heat. luckily he didnt breed her. we just chased him out. so i dont know what i would do if i was you. i know how frustrating it is. we had another dog come in the back yard and tear the kennel wire all up and knocked my dads brand new bbq grill over and then tear the cover up. never saw that one though. we wold have had some lead in him if i did though. Smitteken
Re: Should I press charges? Obviously I'm going to approach it diplomatically at first. But if he gives me any guff I'll have to take action. I know I'm jumping the gun because I don't even know if he bred her. If the dog is AKC registered I can at least sell the pups for something. In that case I may consider taking it easy. And suggesting he gets no stud fee. My dog comes from a very good pedigree and breeder and I was holding out breeding her for a better dog. [/ QUOTE ] This is exactly why the police act like it is no big deal. The only charge may possibly be a leash law violation, but that is "very minor", and usually handled by an Animal Control Officer, not the police. At least where I live. BowJoe
Re: Should I press charges? I would just relax and contact the owner in case of future problems. Just be calm and he may respond in the same manner. Keep him informed of the possibility of your dog getting pregnant and repairing your fence. He might be ok to deal with. johnf
Re: Should I press charges? I'll have to agree with OJR here. Nature is a very powerfull force. I might try to talk to the guy about at least fixing the kennel. At any rate if she is pregnant I would think sale from the pups, even if they're not registered, should more than pay for the damage. Guest alex30808
Re: Should I press charges? This is a big factor as to why I dont have a hunting dog...just my luck I would get stuck with 15 mutts and unable to salvage anything from the other dog's owner. Guest tarbaby
Re: Should I press charges? My roomates heeler did the same thing with my black lab the first time she came in heat and him and his friends saw the whole thing and did nothing to stop it. I asked him to help out with the pups and everything and he just laughed sayin the HE should charge me a stud fee... Lets just say we havent gotten along very good after that. mike
Re: Should I press charges? if you start out being nice about the whole thing you might get the dogs akc registration. then the pup sales will more than cover the vet bills! if you start out with an attitude you might get nothing and he will get a 25 dollar fine! JMHO. if the dog is not registered i don't know what to tell you. do they have a morning after pill for dogs? LOL
stevebeilgard
Re: Should I press charges? i'm with mike. if the father of the groom will give you akc registration, his trespassing dog will be forgiven. if not, i'd tell him the dog will be offered anti freeze next time he's on your property
Smitteken
Re: Should I press charges? I talked to the owners last night. I started out very polite and began by complimenting there dog and his behavior while he was under my supervision. I did let them know I was concerned about whether or not the dog was registered. It is (AKC). Whewww. They offered to give me the papers if Libby is indeed pregnant. I told them not to worry about the kennel, I'd already fixed it myself. It seems like they're going to be pretty cooperative. I'll let everyone know what happens. Thanks for the advice
OJR
Re: Should I press charges? It certainly pays to be nice and it is amazing how things work out! I always try that approach first! There are however, times when this does not work at all! That is when I can kick back real hard!! LOL!!!
Newarcher
Re: Should I press charges? Hey, the dog is registered....I would 'un-fix' the kennel and wait. Free pups at what? $350 or mor a piece? Not a bad Christmas present if you ask me. New
