Shot a doe this afternoon-HELP PLEASE

Connected on a doe at about 35 yards this afternoon at about 4:30 and had deer all over the field. Only the second shot I have ever taken with this bow on a deer. I thought it hit just a little further back as I watched the arrow hit and lower than I wanted to hit, but looked like it still should have clipped the lungs. She was perfectly broadside and looking back in my mind, I think it was a pretty good hit, but could have been a little closer to the shoulder.

The body language on the doe said she was hit in the paunch, but I did not think I hit quite that far back. She tucked her tail and walked off making me think maybe it was gut shot. I thought she staggered a bit as she went down the hill out of my view, that was where we found the first blood. I had 8 deer still out all over my field eating from both of our grower and rackmaster plots. Did not want to get down and push them into her and have her run.

Deer were still out in front of me about an hour after I shot and I really thought I should wait, was not real certain on the hit. Eventually all the deer made their way far enough out into the other plot and it was dim enough I climbed out of the blind and started my way to where I thought I hit. The shot was a fairly flat angle, so I never found my arrow. It was a complete pass through, but it went off in some brush, I think back behind the deer. It was about an hour and half after I shot the other deer started making their way off and I heard some coyotes back towards the house start howling right after I got down. I had called my wife on the radio earlier and told her to go ahead and feed the kids and then I came back to the house and got her and the kids and the truck and some lights. We found some good bright red blood about 75 yards after where I had shot the deer and followed it into a pretty good sized brush pile. Never found any sign where I thought the deer had been standing when I shot. There was some really heavy blood and from what I could tell it was a good hit and I did not hit the paunch. I followed the blood in the pile kind of seemed around in a maze of briars and vines. I lost blood near the other side of the pile and never could get any further past that point. Our rechargeable light went dead and with the mag lights we could not ever find any more blood.

I would guess that the last blood was less than 10 yards from the opposite side of the pile, but the way she was zigzagging around in the pile, there was a spot I got to that there was 3 or 4 different directions she could have gone. I went a ways up each and never could find any blood. Tracks are everywhere in there and distinguishing this one does tracks would be impossible.

We gave up for the night, but I am thinking this doe will still be in the pile. The other deer on the field kept looking back that way. Anyone got any tips?

The coyotes I heard, were back in the woods close to the house, is there a chance they had found my deer an hour and half or so after I shot her? That is about 250 yards or so away from where I last found blood.

By the time I got to where we found blood it had been over an hour and a half.

was that pile in the direction of the house?? is that the way she was heading?

Not really Martin. If she left the brush pile and went in the woods adjacent to it, she could have headed that way though.

Really am concerned about the coyotes finding my deer before I can. I know they were out right after dark.

It sounds to me like a good hit too. I don't think the yotes were howling because they found her. I don't think she made it too far from what you've described. She my be still in the brush pile or very close by. If by chance you did kick her up again, it doesn't sound like she will go far.

Lets just hope the yotes found something else to keep them busy for the night.

Let us know what happens in the morning and all the best to ya Willy wink.gif

Do you have snow??

Re: Shot a doe this afternoon-HELP PLEASE

William---another thought. i would really try to find the arrow in the morning before going to look for her. That will give you the best clue on the shot. Also try to find some hair where you hit here. The contents on the arrow will give a pretty good idea how far she will go.

Be sure to check the closest bedding areas in the direction she took off.

best of luck tomorrow--i'll be thinking of you!

Think they sometimes do bed in that particular pile. The brush in there is really thick in some spots, I got hung in several briars and vines following the blood as far as I could. Guessing this pile encompasses approximately 3/4 an acre of ground and is it is next to the woods, it is very uneven terrain and it runs into a gully in the middle.

Before calling it quits for the night last night I walked the edge of the pile both ways around a couple times and never found any blood coming out of it and also looked for eyes shining my light in, but never saw any. I am hoping she is still in it.

Really thought an hour and a half before getting down to look would have been enough time and after finding the first blood we found and seeing what looked to be pretty good blood I think she was likely dead before I ever climbed down.

Got my boss(3 year old daughter) with me so after it warms up a bit I am going to try and see if I hook up the portable tv in the yukon this morning and drive back next to the pile with and try to look some.

Will look for the arrow first, but I am not too sure if I will have any luck finding it.

If the blood was not dark, but was a red red, and in spots was puddled about 8-10 inches it should have been a good hit right?

Re: Shot a doe this afternoon-HELP PLEASE

Seems like she would be down by now...

From your description anyways..

Sounds like she was trying to bed but kept feeling the wound and could not find a comfortable spot to go down. She eventualy went down but not beded...

JMO.

The yotes trouble me too. I hope they had other things to play with for your sake...

Oh and forget the arrow. Its gone...

JMO but I never ever can find ground shot arrows. They bury to evenly once they encounter earth...

I found one recently from a hit 4 years ago. shocked.giflaugh.gif

No sign on it. smirk.gif

See -waste of time... LOL grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Use your time doing a body search if the blood trail drys up JMO...

Found her-too late

Less than 24 hours after the shot and the coyotes left very little. Guess when I heard them last night they had already started. She was right where the direction the coyotes were howling from last night an hour and a half after I shot her.

Really sucks my first bow kill was eaten by freakin yotes.
