Just found out....

I just got home from opening a checking account for my paintball team at the bank. While the lady was checking to see if I have any account anywhere else she asked if I had an account through Citibank. I said no and she told me that apparently I have a home loan there. Someone has taken my info and got a house under my name.

Im not 100% sure if its a house but the loan was for like 80,000. Can anyone help on how I can try and figure this out or steps I need to take to get this resolved.

PLEASE HELP confused.gif

PS my paintball team is a non-profit organization for all you sponsorship possibilities out there. Any money you donate you can write off on your taxes. Something to think about. wink.gif

Re: Just found out....

First, someone has stolen your identity! You need to contact the credit bureau's and make sure nothing else is used with your name!

As to the non-profit status. Is it a 501-C3? If it is some other 501 status, it might not be tax deductible!

Good luck!

Re: Just found out....

OK but is there any way I can find out where they are and all that good stuff. If its in my name I would like to have it. Better yet the 80 grand sounds pretty nice.

And Im pretty sure its a tax detuctible. Our manager is in charge of it and thats all he talks about is how you can write it off. We got a seal and a binder full of stuff for all the members of the organization.

Re: Just found out....

The money is gone.

1) You need to call all three credit bureaus and request a copy of your credit reports.

2) You need to go down to the police station once you get copies of your credit files (all three) and file a police report.

3) You need to put an immediate fraud alert on your three credit bureaus and renew it every 89 days.

4) You need to check each item on your credit file and make sure they are valid. If there are any records on your file that aren't yours, you need to contact the company that extended the theifs credit and tell them what happened. Give them a copy of the police report and an affadavit signed that says they extended credit to someone who is not you. Be prepared to be treated very rudely as if you are a thief by these people.

You didn't mention whether or not the account was delinquent or just showing up as on your file. If the account is current, then it is possible the credit bureau made a simple mistake. If the account is delinquent, then it is possible that the writer of the account is doing what is called dead heading. They think you are somehow related to a debtor and since they can't find johnny debtor, they put it on your credit report thinking that when you see it, you will rat Johnny debtor out or ream him a new one until he contacts the writer of the debt.

What you have going for you is that most fraudsters do not usually buy houses because they aren't liquid assets and easily removed for safe keeping. TV's, cars, etc. are more often bought through ID theft. This sounds like it could be a case of simple error on the credit bureau's file.

If you listen to nothing that I say, listen to this. You want these items off your credit report, the bank lost the money...you did not. They loaned money without getting proper ID (assuming it is fraud). You MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST do everything in writing with all of the bad accounts (if it is fraud, there will probably be many). You MUST MUST MUST send everything return receipt requested through the post office. Make copies of everything, keep copies of everything with the receipts showing when they received it.

This will take a long time to resolve and you need it resolved before you need another loan. If you can't get it fixed before you need a loan, then take a copy of the police report with you.

If it turns out to be a simple mistake on the credit bureau's fault where a valid loan by someone else was put on your report, they have a process for getting it off your report. It too will be long.

listen closely to new. he's right on. there is nothing good in this for you. stop it now. don't hesitate to call the fbi, and get the feds involved. this could grow into a mountain of trouble for you, and needs to halt right now.

I've had a few phishing e-mails supposedly from Citibank. Maybe someone you know replied?

I've had literally hundreds of those scam emails. All it takes is to get sucked in once, at giving out your info.

I get them all the time from Ebay, PayPal, and all kinds of different financial institutions. Some of which I do deal with, but most of which I don't deal with and never have. After getting hundreds of these things, It's very easy to see how some folks get sucked into giving out their personal information.

I simply pass each one I get on to the RCMP smile.gif That's their job.

That's one of the reasons I will never pay my bills on-line. It scares the heck out of me.

When you say credit bureaus do you mean Eguifax, Experian, and Trans Union. I know that may be a stupid ? but Im new to all this credit stuff.

I should only file a police report if this shows up on my credit reports, right?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yep, those are the three. Be sure if you request your copy on line that you go to their official website. There are several out there that offer free copies of your report that are of dubious natures.

Even if this is just a bureau mistake, it is a good idea that you keep the fraud alerts on just in case. Even with the fraud alerts in place, lenders still extend credit but it will stop some like the instant credit at some retailers.

Re: Just found out....

I once had BellSouth deadhead me because of an account that my sister had due. They put it on the credit report of my wife....I love my credit and I guard my credit with great fanfare. I raised so much cain that they had it off my credit the very next day. Should have sued them...it was the wrong name and account number.

I used to work in the industry and listen a lot to Dave Ramsey....if you can find him on an AM station near you I highly recommed him.

Glad I could help....let me know how it goes and what you find out.
