Re: Deer Dogging??

illegal here too, but a big Congratulations on your deer cool.gif

I don't mind dog hunting. I did a bit when I was younger in northern Ontario on crown land. As long as the dogs aren't running private property it can be quite exhilarating.

When I see guys running their dogs through private land, and then shooting the deer that come out of that private land, I look at it the same as poaching.

I'm glad it's illegal here. There is just too much private land, and dogs can't read too well. grin.gif

What's that got to do with it? There's a difference between shooting and hunting.

Does it really matter how one "kills" a deer for their freezer? Come on...sit in a stand and kill a deer, hike a mountain, shooting house, blind, deer drives, dog drives, etc...end result is a dead deer.

Sorry, but I got from your orginal post that because someone "drives" deer to kill them...they aren't hunters. I disagree!

Re: Deer Dogging??

I don't care if guys hunt with dogs as long as they do it responsibly. But I've had my hunts RUINED by guys who turn their dogs loose in still hunt areas on purpose. Those kind of people really make me mad.

My husband runs dogs on a hunting lease of about 4000 acres. they have a lot of fun.

Yes it does.

If doggin deer is a legal method of hunting where Jason lives, then who are you to chastise another legal "hunter" for it, just because you have your own "personal opinion" about it?

You can't change state laws in this forum.

Care to explain? As long as its legal...why/how does it matter?

I usally find these types of posts humorous...if heath would have posted that he killed 3 wallhangers...everyone would be congratulating him...but no...some critics have to comment on how they were killed.

Me personally would rather see someone hunting over bait and making a quick clean kill than someone tracking a deer and making a bad shot and not find it.

so then by your opinions you shouldn't be able to use dogs to pheasant hunt then? or are you okay with that? if its legal and you enjoy it have at it!! i personally don't think i would do this but that is my choice. running down someone for the way they legally take game is just nonsense!! mad.gif there are all sorts of ways to hunt, its not our decision to say whether its right or wrong smirk.gif

Re: Deer Dogging??

In Illinois its illegal....but during gun season, there are "human" drives where you have people posted toward the exit routes of the "drive"...not much difference, other than that the guys on the drive get first shot if they are not in range of the guy waiting for the deer....if its legal, and you shoot a deer, and feed your family, good for you......many a time, I had sat in a stand quiet, and patient and kinda hoped something would stir the woods up a bit...........al

Re: Deer Dogging??

It's illegal here to hunt deer with dogs and I really hope it stays that way. It's legal to kill any dog found chasing deer and despite me loving dogs to death if I ever saw one chasing a deer it'd be shot. Me personally I'd never hunt any big game animal (deer, bear, cougar, etc.) or turkey with dogs even if it was legal. I never really found any sport in it. I'm not even a fan of human drives either I've witness way too many people doing them and their attitudes towards the deer they killed were horrible and they had no respect for the still hunters in the area while doing them.

If it's legal for you and you can enjoy it then congratulations. How about some pictures of the deer?

Re: Deer Dogging??

Not legal here, and wish people who turn their dogs loose around here rabbit hunting an bird hunting would keep up with them better without trapsing all over our property and the neighboring property where they DO NOT HAVE PERMISSION. A shame so many when they lose their dogs, do not have the common decency to respect other hunters and landowners rights. Have heard the remark too many times that the dogs cannot read the no tresspassing signs. The people hunting with them can though and they should not chase their dogs onto other properties without first asking for permission!

Congratulations on your 3 wallhangers, any pics?

Re: Deer Dogging??

As many have said if it is legal then how can you get on someone for hunting with dogs. Congrats on your deer. If I lived where it is legal to hunt with dogs I am sure I would try it. I love to rabbit & pheasant hunt with dogs so I am sure deer hunting with them would be fun. I love to sit in my treestand & deer hunt. During shotgun season a few of my friends & our kids spend most of the weekend doing deer drives. We have a lot of fun,see some really good deer & sometimes get a nice one. Yes, there are alot of ethics involved in hunting, good shots, recovery, etc. but it also is supposed to be fun. Who am I or anyone else to say that deer hunting with dogs is not ethical. If it is legal then there is nothing wrong with it. I know lots of people don't agree with it or other hunting ways, like hunting over bait. It is not your place to call it unethical but it is your choice to not do it. If you don't have fun doing it then you wouldn't. I have a lot of fun sitting in stand & performing deer drives. As long as it is legal go for it. Have fun.

Re: Deer Dogging??

Congrats on the deer....this thread really needs PICTURES! grin.gif

Seems always the same...guys condemn those who hunt legally in another region because it's different from what they feel is right. Does anyone feel superior for slamming someone who's legally hunting in their area? confused.gif

Is someone supposed to not dog hunt in Virginia (where it's legal) because it's not legal in Montana/Wis/Minn/N Dakota etc...? Doesn't make much sense to me.

Hunters slamming guys who follow their local laws does absolutely no one any good. frown.gif

Guess I am maybe confused just a little here confused.gif. Kind of curious who is viewed as condemning the hunter here as some of you are pointing out? I saw where one poster said it does matter how you take the deer in that persons opinion, but did not see anyone really slamming this person, looked as though he just has a differing opinion.

If this isn't meant as a slam, I don't know what is.

[/ QUOTE ]I have to agree with Craig on this one. I've only been here since Oct. but I've seen it enough. People don't have to agree with different hunting stratagies but, if it is legal in there state why bash em for it? I've been fortunate enough to do alot of out of state hunting and everybody hunts different. Ever seen the show A-way Outdoors? wink.gifsmirk.gif
