Guest J_Owens_66
Today i got my new scope put on and got it bore sighted, took it out to the range, set up some targets at different yardages and started to shoot, shot the 100 yrd first. Put the first bullet right in the bullseye, then after that, i never even hit close. The bullets were left and right and up and down and they were just flyin everywhere. It is a Ruger .243 Bolt Action, and it is wearing a Burris FFII 4.5-14X42 A/O shooting Nosler Ballistic Tips (95 grains) with 38.1 of IMR 4350. Could this be the bullets? With my old scope i was shooting sierra game king 100 grains, and they shot great, just wanted to try some ballistic tips. I think it is most likely the bullets, went to wally-world and bought some winchester factory loads, just the plain ole lead tipped kinda deals (100 grains) and will see how they shoot tomorrow. What do yall think the problem is? Scope is tight on rings and rings are tight on base. ?? Thanks
JimT
Re: MAD!!! Probably the bullets. The Ballistic Tips shoot horrible down my 30/06.
robk
Re: MAD!!! i woulkd say the bullet is the culprit. also were you cleaning after each shot? you are also curing the barrel so it may not shoot some bullets. i would suggest like you did try a factory load with a different bullet. i had a 25-05 that shot an 85 grain ballistic tip great but couldn't get other rounds to shoot from factory specs so just give it time and shoot some different bullets and see which the gun likes. you got a good gun so good luck to you rob k
OJR
Re: MAD!!! I would use a good copper remover and make sure the barrel is good and clean. I use Barnes CR10 to get the copper out. Most of the time, if a gun is shooting good and all of a sudden it goes south, the barrel is fouled with copper. It could be the bullet also, but I would try cleaning it real good first. billygoat
Re: MAD!!! Try a different brand of shells, perhaps take two or three out, see if that cures your problem... if not or prior to double check and do a good cleaning on your rifle... after that question the integrity of the scope. AJ
Re: MAD!!! Personally, I would test a known load to eliminate as many variables as possible. Shoot the load that has performed well in the past with this gun. Then you will know if its the scope or ammo.
David_218
Re: MAD!!! It could be the type & weight of your chosen bullet. I've never had any luck with Ballistic Tip bullets either. You might do the following: (1) check your scope rings. (2) Check the bedding of your Ruger. (3) Be sure all the stock screws are tight, except the middle one which should be just snug. (4) Also a different powder might be better something like IMR-4320, but you'll just have to experiment with this and other powders.
