PA_RIDGE_RUNNER
Re: The few...the proud...The OTPG!!!!!!! Mr Strut10 there is the distinct smell of cocoa in the air here. We arent elitists in this gang but we do have our standards. We alone are responsible for the ever growing sales of truckloads of powder and bullet each year. Some of us even hire an eye specialist to push our eyes back into place for the next shot. Man what can be more funner. I personally prefer to shoot and knock the whole target down whether it be game, target or cocoa drinker mustaches.

Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: The few...the proud...The OTPG!!!!!!! Just a quick update for my fellow OTPG'ers. Used the trusty ol' 7 MAG on a 40 pound coyote and a 10 pound gray fox early Monday morning with, shall we say, completely satisfying results. WaCoyote
Re: The few...the proud...The OTPG!!!!!!! VERY NICE!! I think the added foot pounds are critical in a "mixed bag" application like yours. Very good idea. I may have to take the 350 out next time!! A 300 win mag is why my father-in-law can no longer shoot a bow. Ya'll keep the cannons. I'll stick to my 270.
WaCoyote
Re: The few...the proud...The OTPG!!!!!!! I was thinking about a trip to Wyoming for Antelope and Varmints this year and was going to buy a 25-06. So as not to offend my bretheran, I cannot buy a non magnum. What do I do. My 350 isn't flat enough.
Bowhntr
Re: The few...the proud...The OTPG!!!!!!! Look at the 270 Weatherby mag. That thing is a flat demon. I can't remember but if they made a 257 Weatherby mag that would be my first choice.
WaCoyote
Re: The few...the proud...The OTPG!!!!!!! [ QUOTE ] 257 Weatherby mag [/ QUOTE ] Oohhh! I think there is. I may have to look into that!

[/ QUOTE ] Naaawwww. There had to be pre-existing or extenuating circumstances involved. There's not enough recoil generated by the 300 Mags to injure an adult's shoulder, outright. Sure, there's a .257 Weatherby!!! Great round.

Shooting style, shooting frequency, rifle make, and load fired. He has always shot handloads and all of his loads are red line loads in the manuals. Oh and by the way...the doctor that diagnosed his problem is a very big hunter and knows rifles and recoils. No other circumstances, just too much punishment, over too long of a time, by a gun that is just too big for any practical purpose.

I have handloaded for and shot several different 300 Mags over the last 20-some years........in different types of rifles and from every concievable position. I'm on my 14th lb. of powder handloaded and shot through just one of my 300's. And the 300's are not even close to the biggest pushers I shoot on a regular basis. What I'm getting at is.....I shoot big guns and I shoot them a lot. I know how much the 300's recoil. They ain't going to ruin anybody's shoulder that is not alread predisposed to have shoulder problems (i.e. torn rotator, arthritis, etc.) Anyone who can or does shoot a 30-06 can shoot a 300 Mag and not die or even be surprised.........except maybe at how little difference there really is at the back end. As for the "too big for any practical purpose" comment...........drink up.

Also, I'm not here to argue what my father-in-law was told by a LICENSED PHYSICIAN. I too, have shot many big guns 300 mags being on the lower end. However, I see no need to beat my chest and grunt about shooting a cannon that is entirely OVERKILL for the game I am hunting. You can talk of downrange energies, flatter trajectories and blah blah when in all realities most (not all) of the shooters behind the triggers are incapable of placing the shot correctly at ranges exceeding 300 yards. Personally I see no need to have my teeth rattled everytime I pull the trigger, just to say I shoot a magnum, when my 270 is more than capable of dropping anything I choose to shoot it at, at ranges the magnums boast their superiority at. I can put a compression bandage on a papercut but, in all reality a bandaid will work just as well.

WaCoyote
Re: The few...the proud...The OTPG!!!!!!! I think some folks don't get the "tongue in cheeck" humor of the OTPG. I sure didn't need the 350 mag to shoot my deer with this year but I did and it was fun to talk about after. My .308, .270, 30-06, or .260 would have given the same results............Dinner, but it's all in good fun. I even "magnum eyebrowed" myself and bled like a stuck pig. Fun is what hunting is all about and thats what this whole OTPG thing is about.........I think????? I raz my hunting partner constantly about his itty bitty 300 win mag since I have a .350 and he returns it since he has a .445 supermag pistol and I have a .44. It's all in good fun!! I know I alluded to The Hot Cocoa Brigade earlier and in another post. The time is right. Little gun shooters unite.

AJ
Re: The few...the proud...The OTPG!!!!!!! [ QUOTE ] It's all in good fun!! [/ QUOTE ] You got it! It is just sparking some interest in some other cartridges and rattling some cages. I figured I was over my magnumitis but recently I have been looking for a big gun to add to the collection. I have one particular gun in mind and if I see one I may well get it, but until then I have a nice comfortable rocker on the porch with a steaming cup of Swiss Miss with mini marshmallows.
