i have been using my uncles winchester pump action 30-06 for tha past 7 years and its now time for his kid to use it. this means that i am in the market for a rifle.

i hunt hardwoods and can walk 100 yards and hunt a field where 300 yard shot is possible. so what do you guys use and why? what terrain do you hunt?

now perfect world would be to turn my Mossburg 835 into a slug and also have a long range gun. i am somewhat on a budget.

what make, model, and caliber?

thanks

Re: what rifle PA what terrain?

When I go out to PA, I use my .270 Win, but the area I hunt in southern PA, about 10 miles from the Maryland state line, some of the other guys were using 7mm. I would go with a 7mm with a good scope. But if your going to be in some tight timber like pine trees, which we also have out there, I would use a brush gun like a .30-30 or a slug gun.

Re: what rifle PA what terrain?

I carry a Remington Model Seven SS in .243 Win with a Leupold VX-II 3-9x33mm Ultralight Scope. My father carries a Remington Model 700 SPS Stainless in .30-06 with a Leupold Scope. Both guns work great where we hunt in NW and Central PA. We hunt in both heavy forested mountains, lightly forested woods, and fields. The two guns my father and I shoot are very very similar in looks. The only real differences, besides caliber, is the length of the barrel, length of the stock, and gun weight. Remington calls the Model Seven the little sister to the Model 700. Both are great quality guns!

The .243 Win caliber that I shoot I could shoot a deer out to about 300yards with it without hesitation on killing power for deer and medium/small predators. It's a matter of the correct loads for the gun. The caliber itself is a very flat shooting caliber. The caliber has very light recoil which with my bad shoulder is a must for me. The only draw back to the caliber is heavy brush it cannot shoot through to hit a deer inside the brush too well.

The .30-06 caliber is a great all around caliber. You could use it for not only deer season, but bear and elk season too with this caliber with the right ammo loads. With the correct load you too could shoot this caliber out to 300yards effectively. The kick on the gun is much more noticable than my .243 Win, however. My father has never had a problem with the caliber at all. He can even shoot it in the denser brush where my .243 Win cannot shoot into without problems.

My personal opinion is Remington makes some nice guns. The Model 700 in particular is a very popular model by them. It's not that expensive either unless you get into the fancy Stainless or Wooden stock versions of it. The regular SPS is very affordable for the quality of the gun.

All of this is purely my opinion, though. We have several brands of gun in this house (I think we own near 100 guns now) and the Remington guns are the most heavily used, due to their quality and comfort. Their customer service is very pleasant and easy too. I had a bead re-tapped for free on a shotgun I got from them and now after contacting them it looks I may possibly get either a discount or free stock for my gun because I stripped the front sling eyelet out of it.

Re: what rifle PA what terrain?

I bought a .270 this year for the more open areas that I hunt. Up until this year, I've used the same .30-30 my whole life while mostly hunting in really thick nasty stuff where shots are rarely over 80 yards.

Starting this year though I was going to be hunting much more open areas where shots could be a couple hundred yards so I bought the .270 for those situations.

Depends on what you like--long action,short action.If you like a standard cartridge,the 270 is a hard one to beat.I like short actions--a 308 or 7mm/08 are 2 good choices.I hunt with a Browning A-Bolt in 7mm/08

topped with a Nikon 2x7--great little woods rifle

Moon I don't think any gun or bullet for that matter is designed to bust brush. I lost one deer when my .270 hit a twig and I wasn't even shooting through brush, just bad luck.

Been hunting with a .270 win for the past 11 or 12 years now and killed a lot of deer with that rifle. Have shot deer as close as 25 yards on out to over 200. Great flat shooting round.

I use a 270 now, but used a 30-30 in the past, stick with the 30-06 or 270. JMO.

i hunt swamps and some hardwood ridges. i stillhunt a creekbed sometimes. so all kinds of terrain. mostly thick areas tho. i use a 30-06 and wouldnt use anything else. i love the take down power it provides and i would say that it shoots very well. it is a single shot with break open action. i used to use a pump but i really like the short and compact design of the single shot. most of the time i only get one shot anyways. all of the deer i have shot with a 180 grain 30-06 ive never had a deer go further than 30 yards and all but two have dropped where they stood. the doe i shot last year i hit about 7 inches below the spine and it still broke her backbone along with lung damage.

Re: what rifle PA what terrain?

I know funds are low for the college student(was there myself 3 yrs ago) but dont skimp on getting a new rifle, it will last you forever. That being said I just bought a new remington model 700 cdl for a pretty decent price. I got a 30.06 b/c I already had a 270 winchester model 70. I would really consider checking out the remington model 700, its a bolt and you wont be disappointed. By the way you can get the gun and a decent nikon on top for a little over 800$

For the possibility of shots over 200 yards, stick to something more powerful than a .30-30 or .35...like others have mentioned. Lots of good rifles these days. Used bolt actions are usually trouble-free and reliable if you are on a budget. With all these short magnum calibers on the market, there are plenty of good old .270s and .30-06s and 7mm mags on the used racks. Savage 110 or Rem 700 or Ruger 77 would be my suggestions. I really like the old Savage 99s in .300 or .308...if you like that sort of traditional rifle...but they often cost $400+ these days. A used savage 110 bolt action is plain and boring and a heck of a deal.

I shoot the very inexpensive H&R/NEF guns. I've got a 243, 25-06 and just sold my daughters 7mm-08 to my brother in law. All three guns shoot sub moa and you can get the gun and top it off with a nikon prostaff for less than $400 with good scope rings.

Re: what rifle PA what terrain?

Well, if you are in between a .270 and a .30-06, that makes you a .280 Remington. Problem solved, if you can find one! Any of the three will work fine and neither you nor the deer are likely to notice a difference in the field.

nothin

im looking at a rem 700 in 30-06

i just wanted to see what other options are out there

right now im still in between a 30-06 and a 270

[/ QUOTE ]

Good choice on the 700. If you make it down here I can possibly take you to the range and let you shoot and handle my 700 30.06. There isn't a whole lot of diff b/w the 270 and the 06. I also got the 06 for slightly more power if I ever go elk hunting or something.

If this is the case, I would go with the .30-06, only reason being, more ammo choices! You will have an all around rifle for anything in North America! JMO!

Good point about the ammo being more available in the 06. Alot of choices and most stores usually have em in.
