Levels for Mounting Scopes

I saw a segment on TV a couple weeks ago about mounting scopes. They used a couple mini levels to keep the gun level and then level the scope crosshairs. These are what I've found...

Any of you use something like this? Any cheaper ones on the market? Cheaper alternatives? I do a fair job of lining up my scopes now, but I'd like to have them perfect. smirk.gif

Re: Levels for Mounting Scopes

You can use any decent level to level the gun in a vise and across the room hang some string with a plum bob. It will hang vertically to gravity. You can then align your verticle reticle to the string and you are done.

Midway USA sells one called the Level, Level, Level. It is a little less expensive. I have one from Sedgeway called the reticle leveler. I paid about $12 bucks for it a few years ago. It works real well. Before I got this reticle leveler, I just eyeballed all of my scopes with good results.

I have and use a " Reticle Leveler " I have had good luck with it. I have found the most comfortable way is to shoulder the gun with your eyes closed. Wiggle it around until you feel comfortable with it, open your eyes and sight the verticle crosshair on a door casing in the room. Turn the scope to align the edge of the casing and the vert. crosshair, keep repeating until you feel the gun is naturally positioned and the crosshairs are straight up and down. Everyone holds a gun a little differently. What may seem straight to one might be a little crooked to another. It is YOUR gun, make sure it feels good to you.

Re: Levels for Mounting Scopes

LETMGROW,

The only problem with that method is the scope needs to be perpendicular to the bore no matter how someone holds the gun for proper adjustment. Adjusting the reticle's alignment to account for poor form should not be done and definately not if long range shooting is expected. Granted if most shooting is close range (less than 200 yards) and the adjustment is not messed with, you can get by with poor form and an improper adjusted scope. This shows itself when you move the adjustment up and the impact moves up and left or up and right (depending on the cant).

Re: Levels for Mounting Scopes

I totally agree the scope should be perfectly aligned. However if the holder of the gun isn't comfortable with it he may not be as accurate with it. This is another case for personal feelof the firearm.

I try to keep my scopes perfectly aligned but I have an elbow which was injured a long time ago which seems to make me cant the gun slightly to be comfortable. Perhaps I should have mentioned this earlier.

I have found the print of shots is off slightly but years of shooting has allowed me to compensate for this.
