horst
Re: Road hunting?? [ QUOTE ] You said the boy was up against the truck. Just don't think the way I personally view hunting that I would agree that is what he was doing [/ QUOTE ] Ok I see where your going with this. No, I wouldnt actually consider it a hunt, but at the same time if a bucks going stand there and just stare as someone stops, backs up, pulls into a driveway, loads a gun, gets out of the truck, and goes around the truck to the deers side of it Id view it more as a dumb deer then anything unethical being done as long as no laws were broke.Honestly, Id of killed him if Id had a tag and been in the same situation. On the other hand I could have easily backed into the driveway so the deer was on the kids side and let him pop it out the window, nobody woulda ever known. For that matter I coulda taken the kids gun, wacked the deer and put the kids tag on it.As long as I had a valid deer license and we were hunting together it woulda been perfectly legal for me to do so with our party hunting laws.Guese my point is if I was doing something unethical and really wanted the deer dead there were options, both legal and illegal methods I coulda used. Shooting out of the house I guesse I feel the same as you do, I wouldnt do it regularly by any means but if the right buck came in the yard it woulds be an oppurtunity I couldnt resist.Wouldnt the same as stalking one or taking one from the stand but I certainly wouldnt be able to pass up the oppurtunity. [/ QUOTE ] Nope, dont see anything unethical about that Chris really, just like taking advantage of an opportunity in my backyard would not be unethical in my opinion. [/ QUOTE ] Oh boy, let me tell you Chris. You have no idea, well maybe you do, but it was like torture for me to watch a great deer with my 10 year old during the youth hunt this year, the same deer I drew my bow on but was unable to get the deer the few more steps I wanted for the totally unobstructed shot. She had the deer under us and could not get the shot off, I am talking 25-30 yards max with her rifle. The shooting rail was too high for her get on the deer when it got close enough in the dim early morning right at the margin of legal shooting light. Talk about being tempted. I am talking about a deer that is better than any I have hanging on the wall. Would have been too easy for me to take the gun away from her and take the shot myself sitting right there next to her, nobody else ever would have known, but I would have known and she would have known, and it is not legal here to share tags. we did the right thing, no doubt in my mind. Unfortunately we did not see that deer ever again, nor did we ever get anymore pics of him on our cameras. What really stinks is that she held out that afternoon for the same deer with hopes he would come back again. We saw the little 4 pointer he had been hanging with that I had seen him with on my bow hunt and we had seen him with that morning, but the big boy never showed up. She ended up not taking a deer at all, after passing up a couple young bucks the closing afternoon of the youth hunt.
Guest Antony
Re: Road hunting?? Good idea bringing this to a new topic. I am all for glassing, which I see as using a vehicle to spot deer, but using your own two feet to stalk the deer, as long as it does not affect nearby hunters. I guess my definition, as I think more about it would be: using your vehicle in the pursuit of a deer and using that vehicle to get within shooting range and harvesting the deer -- which I find completely unethical. (Some lengthy posts here. I only skimmed, so excuse me for repeating what others said, if I did.)
Washi
Re: Road hunting?? According to a Missouri Conservation agent my brother talked to, even glassing a deer from the road is illegal. He said you aren't even supposed to stop and watch deer along the road.
indianaboy
Re: Road hunting?? [ QUOTE ] My definition of road hunting: Shooting from a road or right of way, or even from a vehicle. What you did I would NOT consider road hunting [/ QUOTE ] I agree
