muggs
Re: Saban to the Tide! [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Sorry, I hope Alabama loses big time. I hate coaches who break contracts and run for the money, same as I hate players who do the same. Javon Walker is a scumbag, as is this clown. Wayne Huizenga gave him everything in Miami and he failed, big time....then quit before his contract was done. His interviews in the past month show his lack of character and/or maturity. "I'm not going to be the coach of Alabama"...really? Why not just say "I won't address this at this time" Instead, he chose to flat out lie. [/ QUOTE ] I agree Craig, whatever happened to the classic handshake and its done deal. Even with contracts written these guys find ways out. No loyalty at all!! SHOW ME THE MONEY!!! [/ QUOTE ] I'm sorry guys, but if another bank were to come up to me and offer me double my salary and a guaranteed 8 years to leave my current bank??? I'd go in a heartbeat. Loyalty only goes so far. My family comes first. Now whether his decision was based on his family's well being or frustration from the pitiful job he was doing at Miami right now, the decision was his to make. [/ QUOTE ] I hear ya Kev, but you have to consider the difference between your salary and Saban's. Doubling your salary would really help your family out...but Saban was making millions...I'm sure his kids weren't starving in Miami. He left a great college program to try the pro ranks. When he did that, he made a commitment to the owner (if I could spell his name, I would ). I'm sure if Wayne Hysingacantspellit would have known he'd only be there for one season, he would have hired someone else. He turned his back and jumped ship ala Larry Brown. Not sure what type of example that creates for the boys he'll be recruiting.
Guest Finn
Re: Saban to the Tide! I don't think he got much of a raise moving to Alabama, did he? Thought both places were right around $4 million a year. Huizenga gave him everything he wanted, then Saban jumped ship after 2 years of mediocre results. Ohiobucks
Re: Saban to the Tide! [ QUOTE ] 4.5 million with the Dolphins with NO job security. After the Dolphins have another loosing record next year, he was more than likely going to get fired. He only had 3 years left on his current contract as well. 4.5 for 3 years is 13.5 million. Hiezinga was reportedly shopping the team around anyway and couldn't find a bidder. He sells that team, who's to say the new owner doesn't clean house and can everyone, starting with Saban? This new position with the Tide is worth 32 million over 8 years. A fully-guaranteed 4 million a year isn't too bad at all, not to mention the bonuses for bowl game wins... [/ QUOTE ] NO guarantee vs. full guarantee. Contract or no contract with Miami, he made the right decision. Do you think Hiezinga wouldn't fire him (or any other pro football team owner for that matter) if he had a year or two left on a "contract"? These contracts mean nothing to both sides involved. Nothing.
MCH
Re: Saban to the Tide! You're right about doubling my salary and doubling his. But more money is more money. I'm with Tom. Contracts are meant to be broken in today's world. If I'm not mistaken, didn't a Home Depot or something CEO get 220 mil to quit this week? muggs
Re: Saban to the Tide! Yeah, Tom makes a good point. But he wasn't fired...and what makes you think Bama won't can his arsh after two back-to-back losing seasons? And don't come at me with this "guaranteed" business. If he loses for 2 or 3 years in a row, he's gone and Bama is buying out a small percentage of what they owe him. Happened here in Cleveland with Butch Davis' "guaranteed" millions. And what about all the false statements he made about not wanting the Alabama job??
dg
Re: Saban to the Tide! I think his heart is in coaching college football. He stepped up to the pros and probably didn't like it. You don't take the HC position at Ala. with the rabid fan base without accepting pressure and risk of failure. There's pressure on both levels. He probably enjoys college the most. Just like many of us would rather watch college over pro.
Ohiobucks
Re: Saban to the Tide! [ QUOTE ] Yeah, Tom makes a good point. But he wasn't fired... [/ QUOTE ] If he coached the Fins next year, he would be fired at the end of the season. They aren't good this year, and they won't be any better next year. Back to back to back losing seasons in the NFL = you're fired. Cullpepper to Harrington to Cleo Lemon? Disaster not waiting to happen, it is happening. Sabans job was not secure at all, the Tide comes along and offers mega $$$ to him with a long term deal.....tell me he is in the wrong. [ QUOTE ] And what about all the false statements he made about not wanting the Alabama job?? [/ QUOTE ] I agree with this one, he should have been as stand-offish as possible with leaning one way or the other. Simply say, "I will not address any of this till the end of the season." and your fine.

muggs
Re: Saban to the Tide! "I guess I have to say it," Saban said. "I'm not going to be the Alabama coach." On staying with the fins " I've stated what my intentions are and they really haven't changed, so I don't know what the issue is." "He told us a couple weeks ago that he's proud to be a Dolphin and he's going to be sticking around," Dolphins quarterback Joey Harrington said. So I'm just telling you there's no significance, in my opinion, about this, about me, about any interest that I have in anything other than being the coach here (Miami)." When asked if he was considering Bama "That's absolutely not true," Saban said. Move over Honest Abe....this guy's a jerk. Not to mention, he came to Miami, made terrible personal moves and now he's running for the bank...with the Fins in schambles. Just another reason why sports are out of control. Ohiobucks
Re: Saban to the Tide! You act like this is something new Eric. It’s OK when a “professional athlete” makes a move that will net him millions upon millions of dollars, but God forbid a coach move to provide for himself or his family. This was a once in a lifetime deal for him, at this time. This deal is going to help pave the way for all coaches to get paid better, and some coaches to get ridiculous monster deals as well. I’m sure Tressel will be looking at bigger and better $$$ after he wins his 2nd national title in 5 years of coaching for the Buckeyes. This is nothing new. Baseball / basketball / football players, even soccer and hockey players sign outrageous contracts these days to play the same game they have been playing since they were kids. As long as ticket holders are paying the big bucks for tickets and companies keep pay millions of dollars to endorse a bowl game or a team or a stadium, this is never going to stop. Now, I agree, he should have gone about this a lot differently. He is a selfish, greedy nimrod in everyone’s eyes now, and he had to know that was going to be the case when he accepted the position. But this was not a one time offer from the Tide and Saban said no. Alabama kept increasing the offer, sweetening the pot, and eventually left him with only one decision – to take the job. Only a fool would turn down an opportunity like this one. To quote a line out of one of the best movies ever, “This ain’t show friends, its show business……Show me the money.”

dg
Re: Saban to the Tide! Well, if you are the leader of an organization that requires a boss that is 100% full-speed ahead like football or war, you can't be wishy-washy and say: "so and so wants to talk to me about another position". The second you show an inkling you may take the position or even be thinking about it, it leaves doubt in the minds of the troops. And that is not fair to them. A coach in a current position with an up and coming game has to display 100% committment to the team. When that game is over, then the coach can drop the charade. I think most who have served in the military can understand when you have a mission to do that isn't desirable, you want 100% from your leader. It may not be pretty afterwards when the leader leaves, but you have to know he was there when it went down. I hope I explained it clear enough, but I understand why coaches don't do the feel-good "folks I may be going to another job" before the last game of the season. They are thinking of the guys who are doing the fighting/playing.
AdvantageTimberLou
Re: Saban to the Tide! LOYALTY and HONOR...... I guess some have it and some do not. My integrity is worth something and the legacy I wish to leave behind means something to me. This guy is a FLOATER.....floats around until the next offer comes along......as for contracts not meaning anything, tell your mortage company you really don't like it and your moving on....do whatever you want with this house, I want out.....SEE YA!! All I can hope for is Alabama to fall on its face and have seasons like my hapless Lions do every year!!
muggs
Re: Saban to the Tide! LMAO...when left to their own devices, Kevin and Tom are sorta funny aren't they? Anyway, I think were I'm coming from is the fact that Wayne Hislingyacantspellit is a good man. Did you see him publicly ask for requests on what he should do now? He seems like a trusting man, and a guy who just got railroaded by an arrogant jerk. What did Sabban do at LSU anyway? I think he had them in the Top Five? Big deal...its not like LSU was friggin' Boise State prior to Savior Sabban jumping on board. I don't know...I guess you should expect this sorta thing coming from a guy from Bill Belichik's coaching tree. I guess when you're riding the coattails of one of the most overrated coaches in NFL history, you gotta jump at any chance you get. Don't you dare come at me with "Belichik's the greatest" and "three rings" smack. I could have won 99% of my games with that team, and with Brady at QB. Let's face it, all Belichik has done is degrade the coaching position by wearing those horrid sleeveless sweatshirts and pajama pants on the sidelines...and then mumbling incoherently at press conferences. I guess a guy can get away with that sorta thing when he's repeatedly labeled a "genius." What I love...I mean LOVE, is the fact that Sabban was willing to sellout...regardless of how it made him look. That sorta behavior speaks volumes for the guy's character...now he's leading 18-year-old kids?? Nice move Bama. Mark my words...this is gonna blow up in Bama's face. dg
Re: Saban to the Tide! People won't care if the "W's" keep showing up in the win column. Tommy Tubberville did the same thing and Mark Richt (bless his religious heart) even made the same sidestep about the future in 2000. Alot of coaches have done this type of twisting the truth.
