Re: Looking for encore barrel for coyote.

I think all three would be fine. If memory serves that 22-250 would be better at ranges further than 300 yards, it shoots a bit flatter and has quite a bit more energy, but the 223 shoots a tini bit cheaper. If ammo cost is a consideration, go with the 223 if not, the 22-250. That's only if your shooting a bunch. The price difference is negligable. Don't know squat about the 204.

I would go to remington, winchester and other manufacurers sights and check ballisitics and get whatever you want.

I would probibly go with the 22-250 if it were me.

Re: Looking for encore barrel for coyote.

Any of the chamberings you have listed will work out to 300+ yards. As far as accuracy goes, its a crap shoot with factory barrels. For a varmint/predator gun, my standards are no greater than 3/4" groups for 5 shots at 100 yards on average of at least 5 different groups. I have not been able to get this level of accuracy with T/C Encore barrels. I have had good luck in the past with Contender barrels, but not Encore. I buy aftermarket.

So if I ever got a barrel, would www.eabco.com be a good place?

Re: Looking for encore barrel for coyote.

I was recently in Texas and witnessed what a 204Ruger will do on Coyotes - devasting! I started researching and decided that I too needed one. Just bought a CZ527 Varmint in 204 Ruger - shoots .5 moa out of the box. I checked allot of sources and the 204 Ruger is really coming on as a varmint/predator cartridge with capability to exceed 300 yards. The 35 grain Berger bullet is the one highly recommended for Coyote. I have a 223 barrel for my Encore and struggles to shoot 1" on the very best of days.

Re: Looking for encore barrel for coyote.

I really don't buy the arguement that a .204 is the supreme 300+ yd varmint gun. Adequate? Absolutely! But what in the world makes people think a really light bullet will kill better than a much heavier bullet at long ranges? I have no doubt that out to 300 a .204 will be great. Past that.......hmmmmmmm. I've talked to quite a few guys who claim to have had several "runners" when the .204 is being used for very long shots.

Don't get me wrong. I will have one someday. But I'd recommend a 22-250 to a beginner. It takes away the guess work.

Re: Looking for encore barrel for coyote.

They are all good choices for fur. It boils down to the type of bullet used. The plastic tip varmint bullets are great as they don't always exit, but if you hit the shoulder bone with the really light ones you will get a gigantic entry wound. I prefer the 52 grn match hollow points for my 22-250 it will exit on a broadside shot but the exit wound is minimal. A lot of guys rave about the .223 with 55 grainers.
