Guest Phaseolus (BeanMan)
Re: The world does not owe you NYB, While I agree with the sentiment , for the most part, this is a internet story that has been making the rounds for the last year. It's forms have included place in North Dakota and Michigan. for eastern Colorado's recent two big storms the local Government helped plenty, especially the National Guard, and lots of people did complain about how it was handled. People will be People. The question I asked the person who sent it to me was, "If my local government dropped the ball when a large scale disaster hit, would you expect the Federal Governement to step in and help. If not then what good would the Federal Government be?" I'll grant you that things in western Colorado are different then New Orleans, we don't have the large numbers of unemployed and welfare bums but the question is valid. ruttinbuc
Re: The world does not owe you Weather Bulletin - Denver WEATHER BULLETIN Up here, in the "Mile-Hi City", we just recovered from a Historic event--- may I even say a "Weather Event" of "Biblical Proportions" --- with a historic blizzard of up to 44" inches of snow and winds to 90 MPH that broke trees in half, knocked down utility poles, stranded hundreds of motorists in lethal snow banks, closed ALL roads, isolated scores of communities and cut power to 10's of thousands. FYI: George Bush did not come. FEMA did nothing. No one howled for the government. No one blamed the government. No one even uttered an expletive on TV. Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton did not visit. Our Mayor did not blame Bush or anyone else. Our Governor did not blame Bush or anyone else, either. CNN, ABC, CBS, FOX or NBC did not visit - or report on this category 5 snowstorm. Nobody demanded $2,000 debit cards. No one asked for a FEMA Trailer House. No one looted. Nobody - I mean Nobody demanded the government do something. Nobody expected the government to do anything, either. No Larry King, No Bill O'Rielly, No Oprah, No Chris Mathews and No Geraldo Rivera. No Shaun P enn, No Barbara Striesand, No Hollywood types to be found. Nope, we just melted the snow for water. Sent out caravans of SUV's to pluck people out of snow engulfed cars. The truck drivers pulled people out of snow banks and didn't ask for a penny. Local restaurants made food and the police and fire departments delivered it to the snowbound families. Families took in the stranded people - total strangers. We fired up wood stoves, broke out coal oil lanterns or Coleman lanterns. We put on extra layers of clothes because up here it is "Work or Die". We did not wait for some affirmative action government to get us out of a mess created by being immobilized by a welfare program that trades votes for 'sittin at home' checks. Even though a Category "5" blizzard of this scale has never fallen this early, we know it can happen and how to deal with it ourselves. "In my many travels, I have noticed that once one gets north of about 48 degrees North Latitude, 90% of the world's social problems evaporate." It does seem that way, at least to me. wtnhunt
Re: The world does not owe you Nope, the world does not owe you, nor should we expect the governement to pick us up or blame them when disasters happen.
stevebeilgard
Re: The world does not owe you i hope this same format gets used all over, and over and over again. it's fact, it's good, and it shows what crumbs the lousianian's are to demand free stuff from me, a taxpayer. Canadian_Goose
Re: The world does not owe you [ QUOTE ] "In my many travels, I have noticed that once one gets north of >> about >>> 48 >>> degrees North Latitude, 90% of the world's social problems >>> evaporate." [/ QUOTE ] I wish that were true. Unfortunately our aborigional population is still enduring hge social struggles, to the point where it almost a pandemic. Not only does it cost the taxpayers millions but th quality of life on such reserves is very low. It's been a lose- lose so far .
johnf
Re: The world does not owe you [ QUOTE ] "In my many travels, I have noticed that once one gets north of >> about >>> 48 >>> degrees North Latitude, 90% of the world's social problems >>> evaporate." [/ QUOTE ] That's rather inaccurate statment. I remember several shots from Fox news of small town low and lower middle class families helping unload choppers with supplies, thanking them for the help and offering the aid workers food. When the choppers arrived and left it was to smiling faces and happy waving people. The difference is the attitude of independance or dependance. Those who depend on the government for their livelyhood never appriciate it and expect it immidiately. Those who depend on themselves don't expect a handout, but appriciate it when it comes. That's the difference.

MagnoliaHunter
Re: The world does not owe you Are you really comparing your snowstorm to Katrina??? IF you so, you have no idea what you are talking about. >>Nope, we just melted the snow for water. Salt water comtaminated everything and washed away most of the pumping system and electric lines. Including underground ones. >Sent out caravans of SUV's to pluck people out of >snow engulfed cars. Kind of hard to send out caravans when all of the vehicles were destroyed along with all of the gas stations and roads. >The truck drivers pulled people out of snow banks >and didn't ask for a penny. Being stuck in a snow bank doesnt automatically mean you are dead, being stuck in 20 ft of water does. And truck drivers cant pluck you out anyway when the roads are washed away or covered with debris. The debris being your and your neighbors' houses. >Local restaurants made food and the police and fire >departments delivered it The local restaurants were nothing but concrete slabs or half destroyed building with no power or water. >Families took in the stranded people - total >strangers. I would have been happy to take in stranded people. I sure they would have preferred standing on my slab of concrete to their slab of concrete. >We fired up wood stoves, broke out coal oil >lanterns or Coleman lanterns. Since my stove was somewhere between my slab and 30 miles to the north, it make take me a while to find it, but at least I will stay warm walking around looking for it. All I felt I was "owed" by the government was that the government make the insurance company pay me the insurance money I had been paying for, for years. BTW, Mississippi got less than half of the money that Louisiana did, dispite the fact that we had more damage. We just weren't a "chocalate city", in NO's mayor's words. LETMGROW
Re: The world does not owe you Seems like some very unfair comparisons here. In a week or so Colorado may be back to business as usual. Chances are, it will be years, if ever, before Louisiana will be.
