Turkeygirl
So I want to get more serious with fly tying...I know how to tie a wooly bugger, lol. I'm planning on ordering a kit from Cabela's but was wondering if there are any other materials I should get - feathers, fur, etc...? And does anyone of know of a good book that maybe shows how to tie flies and what time of year they are good for? Maybe something for the northeast since I live in NY,lol. I'm aiming when spring time comes, to catch something big enough to eat Thanks!
PAstringking
Re: Starting fly tying.... the best thing to do is get a private lesson. when spring comes around i ty a ton of hoppers and ants and beatles. foam beatles and ants are easy to make and you can make a ton of them easily. some black float foam and some black thread and your set. good luck
muggs
Re: Starting fly tying.... There should be a lot of classes or private lessons available. Just make sure you call and see what patterns they're gonna be tying. Around this time of year, I'd bet they're all gonna be steelhead patterns. As far as books go...Charles Meck has written a ton of books about fly fishing the Northeast. He's from PA...but his books cover the entire region and one is dedicated to all the streams in Pennsylvania, and New York. He ranks them and tells what hatches each stream has etc... Great stuff. flyrod64
Re: Starting fly tying.... Private lessons will really help but there are also alot of good dite on the net. I'm trying to remember a sight I used to go to that had a meeting every week to discuss fly tying and had a great visual section. It's been a long time though but I'll eventually remember and I'll let you know. LOL
DU_man_84
Re: Starting fly tying.... try and look around if you have some community colleges nearby, sometimes they will offer a night class on fly tying, the community college i go to use to offer up until like 2 or 3 years ago, then they stopped doing it

muggs
Re: Starting fly tying.... Orvis has a lot of good books. They're written by Tom Rosenbuam (I think??). Check your local library, they should have a ton of good ones. You'll be surprised...and you won't have to spend $$ on them.

Very helpful people that are experienced in fly fishing/tying. I have met with Lefty Kreh and others from time to time at the shop.
