RT and I need your Opinion

Ok guys here is the deal, I have been working with Scott on getting the Photography section of the site updated a bit. Being that trail cams and homebrews are so popular and our members having allot of the answers we were looking at expanding that area.

We would like your input on what catagories you would like to see in there. I was thinking

Digital Photography

Commercial Trail Cams

Homebrew Trail Cams

Members Pics

Keep in mind we cannot have 10 or 20 different ones so lets try and decide on 3 or 4 main areas. We can then have downloads for How To's and helpful documents etc.

Lets hear your thoughts.

And it will be easier to find the answers you want this way.

Seriously looking at that room now and thoroughout most of the year, it really is not that hard to find topics. Not like the lounge where a topic gets buried in a day or two. It is kind of slow in there, dont know if this reorganizing might bring any new life to the rooms or not. Just my honest opinion.

Thanks Andrea, that aspect of hunting is growing so fast it will help members find what they need faster and get straight to the source instead of having to browse through allot of posts.

To address a comment above the reason that section is not as busy as others is allot of members are going to other sites to find what they need when we can answer it all right here.

The idea sounds fine to me. My ideas for categories are:

  • [*]Photography (35mm, Digital, APS)

[*]Videography (VHS, VHS-C, 8mm, Hi8, Mini DV, DVD and Digital 8)

[*]Trail Cameras (Homebrew & Commercial)

[*]Members Pictures (General Photo Discussion)

If any changes are really needed, this format would probably be about the best suited to accomplish your goals.

Will have to say that I do see the potential for more confusion for members who have pics moved from various different rooms by mods with this though.

There should be no confusion because if they look to the room where the pic initially was it will say moved and you just click on the link to where it is now.

As far as there being any new rooms, sub-rooms, or whatever, I haven't heard a thing about it. As far as it being slow in there, you might want to take a look at post counts for each of the rooms. You'll find out that at over 53,000 posts it is the 4th most popular room on this forum. And the easiest way to find info that may not jump out at you is to use the search feature that is located in each room. Sorry, if this is a vote, I vote no.

I ditto this ... if we start putting sub categories in rooms this is gonna get real sloppy ... you will have to do it for the bow room ... crossbow, traditional, compound, .... turkey room archery, gun, calls, ... see where I am going here ... why change it ... I have never gone in there and said gee I cant find anything ... and if I did I use the search feature ... works flawlessly ... please dont change the forums ...

Billkay I never said it was slow in there quite the opposite. Thats the whole point behind the idea, this area of our sport is growing so fast we thought we would spruce up that section and organize it. Not that you and the other mods have not, this was in NO way a reflection on you guys. You do a great job

It just seems that there is so much going on in the "Photography" side of things now ( Cuddeback LeafRiver and other commercial cams, Homebrews, Video cameras and trail cams and not to mention just plain digital or 35mm cams ) that breaking a few of them down would make things easier to find and for you guys to manage, post and help out or find information. I know what you are saying about the search button but it is a little easier and nice to look in a section dedicated to what you are working with. Photography section stays the same just a few more sections IF members want it. Nothing has been decided.

Maybe three catagories but not four! Then again, this section was always a bit slower than the rest of the forums.

Yeah after thinking about my post, I agree with you on that last one being scratched. It would be overkill to have that 4th section I listed. It'd be hardly used probably because the content in it could be posted in one the other forums I listed.

This is all just my opinion and ideas, not a demand, nor am I saying I don't like things the way they are now. I was just simply playing on bigmoss's question and answering it. It doesn't hurt to brainstorm even if it never is used. grin.gif

It is a good idea to keep, incase RT Forums ever does want to get more seriously into including the photography hunters of the outdoors better around here. Some of us really have a passion for hunting and shooting things with a camera sometimes, not always a weapon. wink.gif I agree that this would allow us more organization than having to constantly use a search function to weed out the particular type of photography that we're looking for information on. It would also allow us to not have to search out other forums and websites for answers to questions and finding similar interest and dedication on.

Ultimately the decision of whether or not it belongs here on RT Forums is up to the administrators and moderators. It's their decision whether they want to touch bases on the subject more deeply or not on RT Forums. I'm happy either way.
