Beginning Coyote Hunter

Recommended Posts

I have bow hunted for 30 years, but lately there have been an influx of coyotes in the hills of Ross County Ohio where I hunt. As a result, I am going to start hunting coyotes. Could anyone give me advice on good economical equipment to start out with. I have the necessary firearms and scopes, but have no experience on calls or decoys. Thanks a lot.

Well, this could go on and on but I will start off and say that number 1. Full camo, gloves and face mask. Next I would say, if you are looking for a good electronic caller I would go with the Fox pro . either the 416 or Fx3 or Fx5. depending on how much money that your are wanting to spend. i would definately go with a remote caller though. The predation by western rivers is decent. I have called in plenty with it but I think the fox pro is a little more clear. If you were going with a hand call which will be a lot more cost effective , I would go with an open reed call, for the fact that you can make a lot more tones and different pitches with an open reed call. There are a few commerical calls that are okay but I prefer custom made calls, they are a lot easier to blow without losing your lungs. There are a lot of call makers out there, Myself included, but I would go with a medium to higher pitched call. It seems to work best for me. If you need some instructions on how to blow the call you can go to my website and click on Calling sounds and instructions and I have two videos on there that show how I blow the calls. I hope that helps you out. Also, as for decoys, I have had the best luck with the Jack in the box, and the whirling woodpecker decoys. Both have good motion to them. As for your setup I would go with not trying to call them out completly into the open, set up in an area that will give them a little cover for them to feel comfortable to come in, but still gives you a good area for you to see them come in and get a good shot. Aaron.
