Guest CTJohnB
I have been in the woods this year and one of the things I have been doing is finding area's with 6 or more piles of droppings and sitting on those area's most of the time I see Deer how ever I was wondering are these feeding area's or Bedding area's ? becasue most of the one's I find are under white Oaks and some one told me they were bedding area's But I alwasy thought that deer sat in Super thick area's where they can hear or see things comming at them. Not in an Oak grove ? Not to mention I havent found ground impressions to signify that they were bedding there. I can see that maybe the same area's with loads of dropping I found in the pines could be beds, But How do you know with out snow or somewhat of an impression if there bedding there. Thanks for any and all info John
Guest realtrhunter
Re: Feeding area\'s or Bedding area\'s ?? I would say that the areas are feeding areas. From what I have heard and seen deer will move away at least a bit, from their beds to releive themselves. The fact that it is under white oaks, especially if it is completly open. Guess it depends on what all is availably too.
Straight Shooter
Re: Feeding area\'s or Bedding area\'s ?? Your hunting over a some good feeding area's. not only look for the droppings of deer, but take a closer look around and you'll see busted up hulls of the acorn's and acorn piece's. Deer are sloppy eaters and with a good mast crop they won't be to picky on getting the tid bits they drop. With a big Oak flat like your discribing, you can beat there is a thicket close by within a couple of hundred yards or so, maybe closer. If I was you I'd have that as one of my hunting spots every season with good mast crops.
wtnhunt
Re: Feeding area\'s or Bedding area\'s ?? Dont know, honestly the deer around here will bed in areas they also feed, especially on ridges where there oaks. Have on multipile occasions found beds just in the edge of the woods under oaks on a ridge where the deer can see the field edges clearly and have the steep slope in most cases back behind them. PAstringking
Re: Feeding area\'s or Bedding area\'s ?? i have found that deer will not really bed but just rest near their food source. this usually happens on open oak groves where deer can see something coming. i hunt a big oak patch a lot and have had on numerous occasions a goup of does come and feed, nap, and poop for over a few hours. i would say this is spot is a great place to see does and during the rut i would hunt this spot also. magnatecsteve
Re: Feeding area\'s or Bedding area\'s ?? Where you are seeing the droppings is where the deer are browsing, maybe on acorns if you're in a woods with oaks. Where you find alot of droppings, that means deer are spending alot of time in that area, a good spot indeed. I have found that does and yearlings will bed in different types of cover at times, but if you are looking for a big buck, he will be in a much thicker more remote area, when they bed they isolate themselves somewhat..that's how they get big. The harder it is to get to, the better for big bucks. Now during the rut, hang close to where the does are bedding, the bucks will come!
