iron buck
I went to see Gary stiles the smith who’s making my Left Hand Mauser 35 Whelen the other day. The project is not yet complete but he wanted me to see the stock & progress on the action so far. I can’t wait to see it finished….about 2-3 more months. So far he has the stock shaped, from a Turkish Blank I bought from Ray Atkison. The action is a left hand mauser by Zastava. I bought 2 actions, this one is a 35 whelen, the other will be a 280 rem. Gary put on a new 3 panel bolt….with a MUCH nicer contour & feel than the original. He also made & installed the floor plate release in the trigger guard as opposed to the ugly stock button. He still has to put the 3 position Gentry safety back together, reshape the trigger guard, add a barrel band front sight, install QD Talley rings with a pop up peep sight & have it blued with a satin finish. The checkering will be Flur-de –Lies (sp?). All in all a very nice rifle. I am glad I grabbed up those left hand actions while I could, before Remington bought out the distribution rights. I can’t wait to see it finished! I will be hunting with this one next fall. He will then start my 280, it will be built into a light & handy mountain rifle with a mauser patter B type stock with Schnabel fore end. But that one is a good 18 months away! I can only afford one at a time lol.

iron buck
Re: Left Hand Mauser-35 Whelen-Progress Hi Strut! The directions put me right on target lol. Will you be going to the Indiana gun show in early Feb? I will be going again. Gary said my rifle wil be far enough along to display, checkering done, bolt back together etc. But blueing will still not be done. JUst the same...I want to see it! Maybe hit Fire Mountain again? Always room for that!
Strut10
Re: Left Hand Mauser-35 Whelen-Progress I'll be at the show one way or another. I may be a vendor this year. Not sure.
AJ
Re: Left Hand Mauser-35 Whelen-Progress Very nice! Looks like you are going to have a sweet rifle when he is done.
Guest Colorado Bob
Re: Left Hand Mauser-35 Whelen-Progress I've got an empty slot in my gun cabinet, if you want to leave it here in Colorado after your next elk hunt. We should not put that many dings on the stock chasing those wapiti. The stock looks long enough I could use it as a walking stick getting up the mtn. Jeramie
Re: Left Hand Mauser-35 Whelen-Progress Wow! Im betting that cost a pretty penny! Very nice!
Guest Colorado Bob
Re: Left Hand Mauser-35 Whelen-Progress Bill----I'm not sure if it's the lighting or how you posted the photos----but it looks alot like a Savage to me--------
iron buck
Re: Left Hand Mauser-35 Whelen-Progress Bob...Glad to hear that this one would have a home in your gun cabinet Maybe the 280 would be more appropriate? Chasing Bighorn sheep in a certain unnamed mountain bowl?? Hope you & Jean had a great Christmas. It is just the llighting that makes it look like a savage With respect to cost, while it is not cheap to have this rifle made, it is actually not to bad. Just a bit more than a "custom shop" offering from Remington or when the model 70 was made, Winchester. And a lot cheaper than buyin a Dakota. This rifle will be a MUCH higher grade & quality than any of those. And a pure custom. MAde exactly to my specifications. Lots of custom metal work. That is the best part about it. The whole process from planninig through execution is fun.

iron buck
Re: Left Hand Mauser-35 Whelen-Progress Thanks snap! I am relying on Don to be the official score keeper for posting the exact date of the show. From what Gary said it is the first weekend in February. And yes....Fire Mountain is a must!
