Coyotes something to be scared of?

Recommended Posts

Are coyotes something to be scared of in the dark? Is there any chance that they might not know exactly what you are and attack. During the day I would have my doubts, but when they are in packs at night I am not sure. Reason I ask is because while hunting the othernight I had one pack about 1/4 mile away, and another that sounded like they were 30 yards behind me. Needless to say I got the heck out of there and it scared the crap out of me. I have heard them numerous times but never so close and never that many at once crazy.gif. Armed with a gun I wasn't to worried, but just curious. grin.gif

It would be un-likely that a coyote would attack an adult unless they are rabid, and that is rare. Coyotes have been known to attack small children but it is rare. So you shouldn't have anything to worry about. I've been close to packs before at night and during the day and they didn't bother me. As long as I have been hunting them it is still a strange feeling to be that close when they are barking and howling.

i hear a statistic somewhere while back i wanna say it was randy anderson, that there has been like 30 known people attacked by coyotes since like the 60's and it has been anyone from adult to child, probably 99% of the time a yote is gonna run from you, yes it does get scary but you really shouldnt have anything to worry about

You know I have gotten pretty nervous a few times with the bow. Have had them pretty darned close in packs, it can be pretty unnerving after dark when they cut loose all around especially when they are close and all you have is a bow in the dark. I am more concerned with the idea that there are likely coy dogs around and they are not as fearful of man.

True coyotes aren't really a threat they are more scared of you than you are of them in most cases, even when in packs. Coyote hybrids with dogs are the most dangerous ones, those tend to have a loss of fear of humans due to the dog in them sometimes and have that same instinct that pet dogs that have gone wild get when in packs and they can get very dangerous with an unhealthy predatory nature.

Of course there are always exceptions to every rule and sometimes you just get a bad apple animal or sick animal that will act completely out of order for their "normal" behavior towards humans. It's not something to take too lightly when you have a pack of them following you in the dark or getting too close, but it's not something to become paranoid over either. Just keep your wits about you and if they get too close for comfort act big, angry, and yell at them and surely they'll leave. Most animals don't wish to hunt prey that will bite back and possibly injure them. It's weak things they are looking for.

Re: Coyotes something to be scared of?

Where I hunt in West Texas, there are literally more coyotes than you can dream of. They howl all the time, night and day. When you hear what sounds like a pack of 20 or 30 howling, it's usually just 2 or 3 animals making all of that noise. It's incredible how much noise a single yote can make. There have been times that if I had believed my ears instead of my eyes, I would think there was a whole pack out there in front of me, when it was really a single animal or sometimes a pair.

As to being dangerous. I'd say your odds of geting attacked by one are about the same as your odds of getting attacked by a raccoon, a possum, or a feral housecat. In other words, not very likely. And when varmint calling, I've never had one try to attack me, but I have had several owls and hawks come after me.

Not a chance they'd do anything unless you weigh 40 lbs, have long floppy ears, and you're covered with fur.

I had two or three yotes follow me a couple of years ago one morning as I was looking for my deer from the night before.

Once when I was deer hunting a deer jumped in the back of my pickup. Fish commonly jump onto shore near me. And coyotes follow me around occasionally too! LOL! C'mon!!! smirk.giftongue.gifsmirk.gif
