Re: Nephews first Buck!!!

Congrats on a fine buck there.

Im not sure the concensus on this but personally i feel that the use of dogs and/or 20 humans to drive deer out is very "unsportsmanlike."

Milo Hanson would have never shot the whitetail he did if he had hunted it traditionally. And to those of you that counter this by asserting that we would have never known that such a deer existed, thats fine too. However we would have known as someone would have found the sheds. And when they did all one would be able to do is smile b.c that buck earned the right to expire on his own terms.

sorry for the rant. Everyone runs dogsd where I live in VA too and it just gets to you after a while. IM not at all targeting this at you but people in GENERAL that run dogs do not allow a sporting chance to the animals we pursue.

You dont have a clue how much of a "sporting chance" they have bro. Thats the main type of hunting i do is dog hunting and it takes alot more than it seems...and trust me, they have IMO more of a chance with dogs because when your stalk hunting, you shoot them when the deer is standing still. When the dogs are running him, he's moving 40 mph and most of the time all you have is a road shot, which may be only a 6 foot opening. You weigh the odds..hitting him standing still..or moving top speed. wink.gif Hope i defended my case.

I have used dogs once aswell long ago so Im no stranger to the specifics of it. Perhaps the reason so many people that use dogs end up gut shooting, or worse is because the deer IS moving 40 mph. I dont see the sport in bumping an elusive buck that you may only get one chance at during the regular season.

just my .02

Re: Nephews first Buck!!!

im not tryin to get into this but what is one of the first things you learn in hunters safety? dont shoot at moving animals. this might be a dumb question but do you think the animal would rather be shot standing still and most likely die within 30 to a minute of being shot or be runnin and shot in the back leg or guts and possibly live for days or more with a gunshot wound? this year i shot my deer standing still and with one shot through the heart he died within 3 steps of where he was standing. i saw a guy in our group shoot a runnin buck and hit him in the back leg. we tracked him for about 6 miles and every fence he tried to jump he crashed through and didnt go over. we talked to a guy that said he saw the same deer a couple more miles down the creek. so IMO shoot em standin still. its a little thing called ETHICS!! im not bashin anyone but heathcoeracin put your self in the deer's shoes for a min.
