RUTNSTRUT
Re: Culled this one!! (PICS) Ok not flaming on your kill but,how do you know he had bad genetics? I mean was the property you shot him on managed where you had a history with this buck? Just because ther are no noticeable injuries doesn't mean he had none. Like I said i am not flaming you about your kill, just curious on why you say he is a cull buck. To me a cull buck is one that you have observed to at least 4 1/2 years old and never really seemed to increase much as far as antler size. Therefore you don't want him adding to the herd. [/ QUOTE ]Sorry if I used the word cull in the wrong sense. I don't believe I ever said he had bad genes. I did however say that he was shot in the foot. This buck is not one I would have normally shot. He did have a messed up rack, more than likely from an injury of some sort. He was probably a 2 year old, that would have more than likely never turned into a 140 class deer. I guess I should have called it a mercy killin!! LETMGROW
Re: Culled this one!! (PICS) That is a unique rack. Like someone else said, he may have been injured. He showed some potential for good genetics in rack size. I am glad you changed your title to Mercy instead of cull.

My 2nd cousin had to give me his last years Mule Deer Rack and I told him no more, because sooner or later I'm going to have to many to hang on to with no where to put them in my small room. Randy
Re: Culled this one!! (PICS) Hard to tell Craig, I didn't see any injuries but, I guess we'll never know now!! We had watched this buck since August, He was kind of a loner. Didn't see him at all during the rut and then he showed up again during gun season. I saw him the second day of the season and noticed he had a bad limp. Monday morning when he came out I decided to "see what was causing the limp". Either way, he sure taste good. Guest Finn
Re: Culled this one!! (PICS) Randy, I'd a shot him the first time I got a chance to get that rack outta the gene pool.
dogdoc
Re: Culled this one!! (PICS) unique rack--doesn't look like the typical "injury" type rack but who knows. I think it would be impossible also to tell if he'd grow a normal rack next year or not. One of the big misconceptions about QDM is culling bucks from the gene pool. QDM has nothing to do with culling--that is more for high fence operations that practice TDM (Trophy Deer Management). QDM is more about developing a healthy deer herd by improving habitat, trying to establish healthy deer numbers and ratios, and only harvesting mature deer (based on age not antler size). congrats on the buck--a very unique rack. todd
8ptbuckpa
Re: Culled this one!! (PICS) In one of my quality whitetail magazines I got from QDMA it showed the effect of injuries to racks and how they change for example the one buck at 8months old broke its leg and for that year sported a small disfigured rack however its 2year it had a rack that grossed 145" and finally its third year it went back to no more than a basic 8pt scoring under 110" this was all done with a high fenced deer so it most variables were controlled. There is no real telling if it would have ever scored 140 or not. however any buck taken presents a challenge congrats on the nice buck
