red dot or scope

i know there has been alot of talk about this but i am about to put one or the other on my 870 sps can everyone please give me the pros and cons of both and which you would go with. i am gonna make my decision soon so please help. gonna try to keep the price around $150.00 thanks

What are you hunting for? Deer, ducks, turkeys?

I use my red dot on my slug gun.

Red dot:

Pros.

Instant target aquisition

Ease of use

light

small, won't hang up on stuff

Inexpensive

unlimited eye relief

Cons:

No mangnification (unless you want to spend more)

Uses batteries- They last a really long time if you have enough sence to remember to turn it off when you're done.

If using if for deer I would have to say large shot pattern at distances, because of the dot size

Scope

Pros:

Magnification

No batteries

Cons:

Speed of target aquistion

eye relief

Heavier

Longer, could get caught on brush.

Shorter eye relief could cause fogging in cold weather.

Price-for a scope that can hold up to the 870 for any length of time you're going to have to spend a lot more than you would on a red dot that will do the same.

If I were using it exclusively for turkey, I would go with the red dot, hands down.

You might want to lok at some scopes with crosshairs and illuminated reticles. The best of both worlds. I use a Simmons Pro-Diamond 1.5-5x32 with the ill. ret. works for me and is well within your price range.
