johnf
Re: Permission to hunt ????? Got to agree with PA on that one, especially if it's an older person. I've got a cousin who's land I hunt over thanksgiving break. I have an open invitation to hunt his land as long as I go by his rules and let him know when I'm comming. I aways make a point to go out of the way to go and visit with him. It's just a common courtesy in my opinion.
Guest ohiostBUCKeyes
Re: Permission to hunt ????? face to face is the way to go, this past summer i saw a piece of property that i wanted to hunt and simply went to the land owners house with the mentality that the worse thing that could happen is hear the word NO and forget about it. with that in mind i went to his house and got permission to hunt 600 acres. how awesome is that! ended up shooting an ohio big buck off this property scoring over 140". in short, muster up some nerve and go ask! it's worth it
unioncountyslayer
Re: Permission to hunt ????? I use to go the phone route because by nature I use to be a bit timid around people I didn't know that well, and it compounded my fear by asking them for permission. But over the years I have gotten over that, and they appreciate face to face conversations much more.
wtnhunt
Re: Permission to hunt ????? Face to face at a time when you would expect to see the landowner not too busy or at times you would not expect them to be eating. Be respectful and accept the answer with gratitude whatever the answer may be. Good luck.
horst
Re: Permission to hunt ????? I got some people I will call but theyre people that let me hunt every year, the call is just to see who Ill be sharing the ground with and see if theres anything I should stay out of due to cattle, family hunting it or other reasons. For the first time asking Ill always go in person if possible.Sometimes farmers are hard to catch up with though and the only way is to call at night. GWSmith
Re: Permission to hunt ????? [ QUOTE ] Face to face it will be Thank You very much!! [/ QUOTE ] Good choice! People want to know what the person looks like...even if you know ahead of time that someone will give you permission if you ask it gives them the chance to see your face. It's also a good idea to go in casual clothing(Non-Camo). Also make sure you take the vehicle you will be hunting from as well...this lets them know who's vehicle they are seeing if they drive by when your hunting. If you do get permission try this: Get in the habit of printing out a piece of paper with your name and who gave you permission to hunt the property then placing it on the dashboard when you hunt...leave no doubt It's Very Important... I got in a hurry one afternoon this past season and got out of my normal routine. I forgot to put this piece of paper on the dashboard. With 1 Hour left that evening the caretaker of the property came right through the deer travel corridor in an Argo 8x8 looking for the "Trespasser" Shortly after finding me...He knew who I was since I had hunted this same property for years now. Something I didnt think about caused this to happen...I had changed trucks and he didnt recognise this one
brownie65
Re: Permission to hunt ????? I agree face to face is the only way to go. I have ground that I hunt every year. Every year I will go to the farmers house , talk to him & make sure it is still ok to hunt. I think they appreciate it. Years ago some of the ground I hunt was sold. I happened to meet the guy that bought it. Talked to him for quite awhile, told him about the place & stuff because I had hunted it for a few years. When i got ready to leave, I asked him what the chances were of him letting me hunt. Keep in mind he bought this for himself to hunt. He lives 3 hours away. He said we might be able to work something out. He gave me his address & phone #. I wrote him a pretty long letter telling him some things about me & my family,my hunting experience & so forth. I didn't hear from him for along time, I had kind of given up & figured he wouldn't get back with me. I had put my phone # in the letter. Well one night I got a call from him. We talked & ended up that I take care of his ground for him, keep trespassers out, just help with things & basically have free reign of the place . Just about like it is my own. We have become best of friends ,hunt together, he comes down to visit,we will go to his house & visit. It worked out great. He once told me that he kept that letter. He said it meant alot to him & that he made up his mind after reading it that he was going to let me hunt. Anyway a face to face meeting is best but follow up phone calls & even letters are a good idea also.
magnatecsteve
Re: Permission to hunt ????? Yeah, in person is best. Just be real polite. I got lucky where I hunt. I grew up next to the owners and had asked to hunt, but they said no, they wanted to leave it for the animals as a sanctuary. I let it go at that. Years later I got married and moved within a half mile of the one property and a mile from the other. I would always drive past and just watch the deer. Well one day a neighboring farmer to one of the properties was burning his ditch line and the fire spread onto their property. I could see it from the house, so I drove down there, seen what happened, called the fire dept and the owners. They were surprised to know that I knew where their property was. When they got there, we were watching the firemen trying to put it out..it destroyed two large barns, a pump house, and severely damaged the old farmhouse. While we were there, a crowd of spectators had gathered. Among their conversations, we found out that one guy was hunting there when the fire started, two kids said they hung out in the house before, and a couple of others knew exactly all of the old machinery that was left in the barns. Well, right there on the spot, the owners said to me that it was obvious that they had no idea who was on their property and since they knew me well I could hunt there to help keep an eye on the property!! Patience had paid off! A big plus was this year when I discovered a large marajuana crop growing on the other property. I got the authorities to remove it and the owners were very glad that I was keeping those kind of people out of there. I always send cards on holidays, buy them a gift for Christmas, stop in and visit or just call every once in a while. I even take pictures of the property and some of my harvests.
