Re: .22 Rifle

The .22 is considered the most accurate and deadly weapon made. This weapon in the hands of the right person would most definately kill most any animal.I personally have killed alot of game using this weapon but never dared to use it on a deer, but have seen deer killed with it, so to answer the question YES it will most definately kill a deer.

Re: .22 Rifle

I've heard many stories about .22 rimfires killing deer, but as has been stated... in most states the rim fire is illegal... Besides that the powder charge is quite limited. What grain bullet is on a .22 rimfire? 35 grain or is it less? Either way, when you compare it to 100-180grain for a "typical" high power"... that's quite a difference.

Re: .22 Rifle

Yep, they will kill much larger animals too. We lost a bull several years back to a .22. It was a tiny hole going in and no exit wound. It was dead between the eyes. Stinking poachers.

Around here theres a running joke that after deer season its "Rim-Fire Season." It funny but everyone knows in truth, that the poachers use .22 around here because they are so much quieter.

Its not legal to use a small caliber in Oklahoma but it must have a weight of 50grn or more and can not be a Rim fire. A lot of youth use a 22-250 or a .223.

Re: .22 Rifle

My dad has told me stories of killing deer with 22shorts out of a pistol in California in the early 50's. He said they always shot for the head, back bone or heart. Also that they had never lost a deer and most dropped within 10-20 yards if shot in the heart. Head and back shots dropped dead in their tracks.

I think I could, but wouldn't.

I was Wondering about something.........

Im not saying that i am goiing to hunt with one since its illegal in NYS but could a .22 rifle sucesfully kill a deer...??????

[/ QUOTE ]

Once again, the smallest rifle cartridge I would consider adequate for deer sized game, is the 7.62 X 39 m/m. IMHO ANY .22 cartridge is not a suitable round for the average hunter going after deer.

Re: .22 Rifle

It's illegal to use rimfire ammo in BC on big game, for good reasons, but in answer to your question, yes a .22 cal will/might/won't kill a deer, even with a well placed shot.

Unlike larger calibers, a .22 has a tendancy of ricocheting off of bone (even smaller bones) after entry. Not something I'd want to put my trust in for a clean, ethical deer kill.

You've probably heard a few news stories on TV, about a guy getting shot in the head or face, by a .22cal and the bullet exiting under his armpit or out his elbow. It's just a good example why you shouldn't use a .22 cal on large game.

ya, the guy i hunt with used to have a beef farm, he would slaughter his own cattle, all he used was a .22 i couldnt believe it so i watched him. it dropped the cow in its tracks LOL

[/ QUOTE ]

Yep, givem a bucket of grain and shoot them where the eyes and ears cross. They are stunned and then you cut their throat and they bleed out good. As for deer, I've heard of several dropping to a .22 with the farmers permits to get rid of deer. Facts over assumptions.

i have never heard of a person using a .22 for a deer at all thats werd

I have. Seems poachers like to use a .22 on deer. Have heard quite a few stories about poachers shooting deer not only in the middle of the night where they have no business being, but also using a .22 and shooting them in the head. Seems the .22 is not so loud to draw attention to the scum poachers as a larger caliber rifle would. Guess it is not too surprising that poachers who breaks the law would also be unethical huh.

I would have to say that this post is well said...Just to make a point in case during my first ever ML hunt on Vtbowmans property I passed on 2 great looking doe's to end the suffering of a yearling that we later found out was shot in the knee with a .22 cal. So I would agree the .22 seems to be their weapon of choice here in Vermont.

Re: .22 Rifle

Yes IT is the choice of weapon for VT poachers.

3 deer taken legally off my property alone in the last 2 years have had .22 rounds somewhere in them. My 1st bow bucks entire back straps were gain-green (sp) due to this.. mad.gif

Its is said the .22 probably has taken more deer (illegally) then all other calibers put together.

I am starting to not doubt it... frown.gifmad.giffrown.gif
