I did some tests similar to this when I purchased a few refurbished Nikon scopes. I ran them through my tests which included:

Submerging - looking for leaks and/or fogging

Freezing - after drying the scope, I put them in the freezer for 12 hours to look for fogging

Mechanical traits - mounting them in a one piece mount that was locked in a bench vise and had the adjustments tested stop to stop and then recentered before mounting on the gun. This includes azimuth, elevation, and magnification adjustments.
