Re: Mechanical Broadheads??? Which One???

One thing I forgot to add with my last post was....

Spitfires in particular will close after exiting the animal. They are held closed by a ball detent and spring closed after exiting. This year I shot a doe on opening day and when I recoverd my arrow sttuck in the grond. the head was closed...leaving me to think it did not open. Upon further inspection, during gutting, I found the entrance and exit...perfect 1 1/2" 3 blade wounds.

I contacted NAP who made the heads and they said this was normal.

Re: Mechanical Broadheads??? Which One???

i have never had a problem with my Rocket Sidewinders.

they are very sharp and have hit deer quartering away, broadside, and quartering to and have never had a problem.

i have been wanting to experiment with fix blades but dont know if i want to spen $30 for 3 broadheads that i might not like. i think i might buy the MX-3's when they are available to try.

if those dont work then im sticking with my Mech. boradheads!!

All I shoot is NAP spitfires and have had awesome success with them and I agree that they stay closed with a detent, but have to disagree with them springing closed after opening. One has to manually push the blade back into the detent to hold the blade closed. 100% success for me!!

Re: Mechanical Broadheads??? Which One???

ANYTHING mechanical can, and will eventually fail. There might only be 1 out of 10,000 mechanicals ever fail to open properly, but if you're that 1...

I can't eliminate everything mechanical from my bow hunting rig that might possibly fail, but I can easily eliminate that one. So that's one less thing that might go wrong when taking a shot.

i can agree with you somewhat on that argument but at the same time, no offense to muzzy users, a muzzy has a screw on tip that holds the blades on the shaft. if that were to get unscrewed or malfunction somehow you can lose a blade or all of the blades.

even though fixed blades have less chance of a malfunction then mechanicals....there is still a chance.

G5 Montechs are fulley solid with no parts which would cut the chances of a malfunction drastically.

I'd just stick to the Fixed Blades..no room for error

Ditto. I used to hunt with mechanicals because I had a hard time tuning my arrows. I use to shoot Votex and I didnt like the penetration or the blood trail. So I fixed my problem and now I shoot G5's and I will never go back to mechanicals.

thats why you check your heads before hand and you wont have that problem, and i bet most people know when you tighten them tips before you shoot they aint comin off

Re: Mechanical Broadheads??? Which One???

LOL.........I love some people. I was shooting at a range and another guy was there. We got to talking and we were talkin about mechanicals. He says "they are mechanical....they are bound to fail". I then proceed to say "Oh you mean just like that drop away rest you have"

Shut him up quick! smirk.gif

I am not knocking drop aways but that agruement won't fly with me when you are using a mechanical rest, a mechanical bow, a mechanical release etc.

Nothin wrong to use mechanicals. They are just as good as fixed. Heck a field tip is enough with a heart shot.

GOOD NIGHT EVERYBODY grin.gif

Maybe I wasn't clear...they don't always spring closed...they closed after that shot I made. The arrow worked its way out of the doe(she sprinted after getting hit) and the arrow lay on the ground. I found the head CLOSED, all 3 blades. I called NAP and they said it was NORMAL, but it does not happen all the time, and they are aware of it happening from time to time. That was my one experience with them closing after exit. The wound was all I needed to see it opened with NO problem.

Rocket Aeroheads has some great Mech's, plus you know your gonna get great customer service from Trophy Ridge if you need it. I use Hammerheads for turkeys w/ 2" cutting diameter, and the sidewinders are lethal. I use the steelheads though for deer.

good huntin', travis

Re: Mechanical Broadheads??? Which One???

I shoot NAP Spitfire XP Pro's and I have not had any trouble. I shot my 140 class 10 point last year and he was quartering toward me slightly. The blades were all opened when they entered the cape and about 6 inches of his guts were haning from the exit hole. I have pictures that I could email you but due to the graphic nature I will not post them on here. I would highly recommend them if you are interested in mechanicals.
