M00N
Re: Hey Computer Guys www.newegg.com www.tigerdirect.com Make sure if you're just looking to add another stick or two to your already existing stick(s) that you match your memory or else you'll be in for a world of trouble. If you're looking to buy brand new and toss the old stick(s) make sure you get a compatible type and buy them in pairs. I'd recommend sticking to either 1 pair of 512MB sticks or 2 pairs of them if you can afford it. I don't recommend the 1GB sticks in older systems sometimes they cause trouble. The Dell Dimension 4700 should have 4 memory slots. The tricky part is that model they had three different types of FSB (Front Side Bus) Speed computers that they sold, so you'd have to figure out which speed your system takes by checking an already existing memory stick for the FSB rating in MHz. It'll be either 400, 533, or 800 MHz FSB. You'll probably end up looking for a PC2-3200 non-ECC or PC2-4200 non-ECC memory sticks in the correct FSB that your system takes. VermontHunter
Re: Hey Computer Guys Before you run out there and start buying up the memory world.... (which isn't a bad thing ,, you can't ever have enough memory... ) Check out how many programs you have starting up everytime you boot your system,, there's a ton of programs out there that just love to hide themselves in the back ground and load themselfs everytime you boot your system... Also be sure to scan for spyware and adware this will also cut into performance bigtime without you even knowing they are there....

Click on the Startup tab and a list of programs that startup automatically will be displayed. If you have Windows2000, msconfig will not be installed. You can download it from Microsoft's web site and then run it.

[/ QUOTE ] Best idea since it's Dell. Dell's are notoriously finicky with memory. Even stuff that's the right kind and speed based on specifications sometimes won't work in a Dell. If you go the retail store route. Keep the receipt until you're positive it works

M00N
Re: Hey Computer Guys Good writeup on MSCONFIG to read on how to use it properly. [LINK] Here's a good website to lookup items in the startup for MSCONFIG to see if they are really needed to run up when your computer starts, if they are a virus/trojan infection, or if they are optional to turn off. [LINK] It's always good measure to crosscheck everything in the startup menu on the MSCONFIG to make sure it's not bad for your system (virus/trojan infections) and to make sure before you disable it that it won't effect how your system runs. When in doubt don't disable a startup item is always a good method to use in unsure instances.
