Hi,

First time user. Recieved a tc thunder hawk as a gift years back and never had time to try it. ML season in NY is only a week and usually to much snow or to tired from reg. season to play anymore. Anyway, done tons of reading on ML and think I have the basics down. Want to change the sights on the gun though. Most shots will be up close and personal so i'll stick with open. Tro Glo sights look good. Question, no noticable attachment screws on my front sight. Could it be hidden underneath the front blade? Also, anyone have expierience with thunderhawks. I know its not a cadilac. Have a lot of expierience with long guns and hand guns but not much with ML. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks

Howdy Stomp!

Welcome to the forums. I see you are from NY like myself. Where in NY are you from?

I too have an older model Thompson Center. When I was ready I ordered the fiber optic sights that T/C makes and I had a gunsmith attach them for me. The whole deal with mounting was about $50 and it was well worth it. I'm no gunsmith and the front sights are tricky to remove without dinging the barrel.

Good Luck

Ranger

Re: TC Thunder Hawk

Hey Ranger,

I'm from the Buffalo area. That being said, I'm also a do it yourselfer so I'm determined to tackle this sight solo. They make a front sight vise designed for taking out and adjusting front sights for about $50. I'll go that route before I pay a smith. All always have the tool then. Just trying to find one I like. Thanks for the reply.

Re: TC Thunder Hawk

the screw is under the sight ,nock out the sight with a brass punch or wood dowel.

I have my thunderhawk for years gun has never failed in rain sleet or snow,I like RWS 1075+ caps used with a t/c flamethrower nipple and 85 grains of triple 777 and a buffalo 375 SSB bullet/sabot

I found nothing walks from this load and is good to about 130 yds

Re: TC Thunder Hawk

Hey Lone Wolf 5437,

Thanks for the info on my Thunder Hawk. Sights are installed. Little nervous popping that old one out without damage but went all right. Was not real pleased with the Tru Glo Installation though. They give you a bunch of tiny screws to choose from. When you do find the right one, if its to long, you have to slip in a tiny lock washer. Comes with 3. None were the right size though. Took me longer to locate one then the whole installation. But they look pretty good. I am going with Triple 7. Bought 50 Gr. pellets but really wanted powder to expieriment some. Tough to locate around here. Also put on a 209 conversion kit so should be good to go. Starting off with Barnes 245 GR. spitfires but I am going to try a couple more. Thanks again.

Re: TC Thunder Hawk

STUMP: DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THE 209 CON: JUST GET A FLAME THROWER NIPPLE AND NO #11 CAPS

I LIKE A GOOD TIGHT CAP ON THE NIPPLE SEEM TO KEEP OUT MOISTURE IN WET WEATHER

I HAVE GOTTON THE GUN SO WET ONE TIME WHEN I WENT TO SHOOT IT THE WATER BUILD UP ON THE BOLT SPLASH ME IN THE EYE WHEN THE BOLT HIT THE CAP,BUT STILL FIRED

I DID ONE TIME UPGRADE TO A MUSKET NIPPLE WITH MUSKET CAPS AND IT WAS THE ONLY TIME I HAD A MISFIRE

Re: TC Thunder Hawk

I have a Thunderhawk also. Stainless with syn stock. I had it sent back to T/C( Fox Ridge outfitters) to have it updated. I too changed the sights to the fiber optic ones that T/C offers, had the QLA done. They remove about 1" of rifling at the muzzle for the bullet to engage the bore better alligned, AND...I bought and coverted it to 209 primer. That required another bolt and nipple. Kit was like $29.99

What I found out about this gun was that it was VERY finnicky as far as loads go. It shoots best with a 350gr Maxi hunter with loose powder, pyrodex RS 90 grains to be exact. I tried pyrodex pellets, no good, triple 7 pellets...no good, Jim Shockeys Gold FFG NO GOOD!...even switched up the primers too...NFG grin.gif I was looking for cleaner burning powders. Pyrodex stinks when you clean it, so thats why I leaned towards 777 and tried Shockeys Gold. As I found out, it shot best with 3" groups at 100 yards with 90grains of loose pyrodex.

I have had a misfire hunting with the gun when it was still ignited by #11 primers. That led to the 209 conversion. I don't think it made much of a difference, but I have peace of mind that the 209 is a more reliable ignition system.

Maybe your gun will shoot different, and maybe I can save you some time at the range.

Re: TC Thunder Hawk

Hey ADJAM,

Thanks so much for the reply. Had this question posted on Cabella's forum and not even a nibble. Thanks to all that replied. You guy's rock. Think I'll s**t can the Cabella's site. Unforunately I had allready purchased some triple 7. But like you said. Maybe my gun will react different. I also have pyrodex powder to try and I plan on trying some different bulleta to. Thanks again all. You guy's have been a big help. Keeping this site on my favorites.

Re: TC Thunder Hawk

I'm glad I was able to help.

If moisture getting at the primer is a concern, make a little leather strap, wide enough to completly cover the opening exposing your primer, with velcro on both ends and wrap it around the breech to cover the nipple primer. Make sure that the bolt can travel freely when the trigger is pulled. That is a quick fix to keep snow out and maybe some rain.

Good Luck on the range!
