Guest abster71
now that the breeding season is coming and they say to only howl should a person use a male howl or female to start of with or challenge howl after 1st seriies of howls should a person mix it up just looking for some advice on what you guys do . right now all I 've been using is distress and some female lone howls to imitate a new yote hunting the area. when I howled the other nite I had a pack start up yipping and howling across the road in the past when we get this we've never connected on bringing them in have waited them out along time also. Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: howling? I've never called anything in by howling. That's purely something I do to decide if there are any yotes in the area. If I want to call them in, I use some type of distress call. BTW - I never use a factory howler. I just let out a couple of big war whoops and the yodel dogs can't stand it. They just have to answer back. A police siren and a train horn work well too. jcwa
Re: howling? You don't have to just howl during this time of year, distress calls work just as well. You don't want to sound like dominate male. You want to sound like a young male. Never challenge unless you are challenged. You just want them to know another coyote is in there territory so they will want to come and run them out. Using a female lone howl also works great. It will work on males and females. You can also use a male and female combo with some wimpers and ki-yi's, to make it sound like mating is going on.

sureshot
Re: howling? I have no idea if its the cold weather up here or not but I use 2 howlers a primos mini mag and make it sound like a male and a crittergetter with a .15ml reed to sound like a female, I start out with a female invitation howl which is similar to a greeting but not quit as long and a brubt end,I may add a few yips in there to, I let be then a few minutes bark and greeting howl from the male, then I will just talk back and forth to sound like 2 coyotes, then I will throw in a few distress calls, let be a few minutes,I may then throw out a female wimper followed by a few barks from the male, sounding like he is breeding her, if nothign is in within 20-30 minutes I will throw a series of 3-4 sharp short howls from the male howler, in my opinion they are challange and the past 2 weekends this is when the majority of the coyotes came in, I am not dissagreeing with jcwa,he is the one who showed me howling and he knows his stuff way better than most, but up here anyways this is what convinces the male that its time to get the other male out of the territorywhen he starts to challange him!I have no idea why but I can count on one hand the times a coyote has howled at me unless spooked and warnign others, plus when this happens I do not stop I keep what I am doing it does not seem to affect others!Plus I have talked to my fur buyer last night he said has has talked to 20 people the past 2 weeks and no one is calling anything in at all, all using distress!maybe its just the northern coyote different from the southern but its the way it is here![btw the primos howler does sound like a young coyote, plus I do not go right to the tip, maybe this is why the challanges does not spook them] good luck! Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: howling? [ QUOTE ] A train horn? Where do I get one of those that I can carry?(LOL) [/ QUOTE ] I don't know either, but it would be a hoot to have one! There's a railroad crossing just outside the southwest corner of my ranch, and every time a train comes by, it sets the yotes off.

I was talking about right off the bat, when you start calling, never challenge unless you are challenge. abster71 asked [ QUOTE ] they say to only howl should a person use a male howl or female to start off with or challenge howl after 1st seriies of howls [/ QUOTE ] I didn't think you were disagreeing with me.
