Re: Where to buy

What is your definition of started or finished?

3000 bucks for a finished dog is an absolute steal. A well bred 8 week old puppy usually runs between 500 to 1000 bucks so I don't think you will find a decent bred started dog for under $800. Training expenses with a pro-trainer run anywhere from $450 to $600 a month. A started dog needs at least 4 months of training to get thru obedience, collar conditioning, force fetching, to basic handling (early T work).--that alone puts around $2000 in the dog. The puppy originally costs 500 so you are already at $2500 and that does not include any veterinary care (shots, deworming, heartworm prevention), food, and other expenses. I have 2 year old that I would consider finished--doing multiple fall retrieves, walk-ups, diversions, and blinds. I couldn't count the number of hours I have spent on her to get her to this spot. If I sold her for $3000 bucks I'd be losing a bunch of money on her--and I trained her myself.

So I don't know where you could buy a started or finished dog for under 800 bucks--to me if you can find a finished dog for $3000 that would be a bargain. A started dog for $1500 to $2000 is a bargain. A well finished dog around here will go between $5000 to $8000.

good luck in your search.

Re: Where to buy

i fetched my own birds for many years--sometimes with a fishing pole and a pencil popper.

Get you a good dog from hunting stock--a good training program and I bet you could train you one fine hunting dog. There are several good books/DVD that will help you from puppy obedience all the way to retrieving that duck/goose.

[/ QUOTE ] dogs are expensive, and as far as training your own, i would get some books and speak with a pro-trainer... just have some time set aside because it takes time and some patience.... i am training my dog "buck" who is a yellow lab.. good luck with gettin a dog
