I have never hunted turkey. So this will be my first time this spring. Just wondering...........do you guys get the shakes and the pounding heart just like when you're deer hunting?? I just can't see getting that excited over a bird. confused.gif I sure hope I am wrong. wink.gif

Re: Get the shakes?

Just wait until you have one gobble really loud in your ear and have it rattle your head. If that doesn't get you going I don't know what will. It's actually more challenging for me to hunt turkey than deer. Deer I hear them coming 9 times out of 10 and see them sooner, turkey they have this habit of just popping out right infront of me from the middle of nowhere. They are also quick learners you mess up a shot on a bird sometimes it normally will not fall for the same trick again. JMO wink.gif

When they gobble, you more or less, know what direction they are,,,but when it's quiet, then you start to wonder, it's quiet, but they are moving,..be patient and be still...

Re: Get the shakes?

For me the shakes and heart thumping is when I'm trying to get them in the wheelhouse, so many things can go wrong. Once I have them where I want them I try to already have a plan as to where i want to shoot, mostly only worrying about missing - to me the shot is anticlimatic.

On deer I'm just the opposite, getting them into the wheelhouse I'm usually calm and collected, get more pumped when there in the wheelhouse, the shot is automatic and then I need to sit down for a while LOL.

Trust me it can shake you up.

Re: Get the shakes?

Shakes can come in the beginning or on the back end.

Emotion will flow no doubt, wether it transmits into shakes or supreme concentration is up to you.

I find the interaction with a gobbler(s) is one of the best way to get the adrenaline pumping and appreciate one of nature most majestic creatures.

Also, turkey hunting is usually done with someone else. So the memories are that more intense, and bonds are created forever.

For me, I never feel more ALIVE than when I am at full draw or have a gobbler in my sights. When that dissappears its time to hang up the tools. grin.gif

Re: Get the shakes?

I don't know about the shakes but last year I started Jumping. I had just called in 3 Jakes, they came up over a hill and were only yards away and it was all silent well Boom! One of them Thundered out a Gobble, Don't know why but I jumped! grin.gif

Then Opener a Jake walked in all nice like and gobbled again made me jump.

Re: Get the shakes?

Yup - my pulse does go up, my heart does beat up into my neck, and I get some shakes particularly if the tom pops into view either really close or comes from behind me.... A sure fire stress test I tell you is a big tom popping into view, gobbling into your brain, spittn and drummn.... I still think it is the best thing you can do with your clothes on...

Yep, feel the same way here.

Dont usually get the shakes with deer or with turkey until after the shot.

Get up close with an ole longbeard and you'll forget about thicket goats!!

Nothing like turkey hunting, being able to communicate with the pursuited and completely fool him into thinkin' you are one of "his" kind beats sitting in a tree waiting on something to walk by any day!! Which this is just my opinion.

Re: Get the shakes?

I killed my first turkey (gobbler) ever with my bow this fall. I wasn't nervous at all until after I made the shot and he dropped. I was tripping, falling, shaking and you name it trying to get out of my ground blind.

I was fortunate enough to have my dad with me in the blind to witness (he was even more excited than me). Those are moments I will treasure forever.

Re: Get the shakes?

I dont get shook up until after the shot. I think it helps to be sitting down. You dont have the standing in the treestand factor waiting for that buck to get in close. There is nothing like it other than a bugling elk. Just hearing their thunderous gobble as it gets closer. The spitting and drumming when they are really close. And the beautiful color of the fan coming your way. I really dont have anything good to say about turkey hunting. If you think deer hunting is addicting wait till you start chasing long beards. Its awesome!

Re: Get the shakes?

I was shaking so bad when that gobbler was right next to me spittin' and drumming, there's one, count it, one palmetto frond between us...lol... he must of thought i was convulsing.....he left soon after, lol.....i can laugh only cause i took him the next day....

Usually i get the shakes as soon as i get out of the truck in the morning, no lie, i might even puke from excitement, God forbid i hear a bird, lol.....then as season progresses and i've hunted some, i usually don't shake until i see him, then i just fall out after I get the bird.......there's no amount of buck fever that could come close to the excitement of turkey huntin'.......Good Luck.
