Where'd the food go???

This is a question we may be asking in a few years. I was watching a show on TV which was touting the use of corn to make ethanol. Just suppose this catches on to the point it drives corn prices up so high corn will no longer be produced to feed livestock or farmers will quit farming except to grow corn for the new market. Almost a little scary isn't it! confused.gif

Re: Where\'d the food go???

There appears to be a renewed interest. There is talk of a plant being built North of here to process corn and soybean.

A lot of vehicles being produced today are already " flex fuel ". Meaning they will operate on enhanced fuels. Check some of the prices on filters etc. Think you are saving money?

Re: Where\'d the food go???

we just got a ethanol plant here. its cheaper to buy ethanol but you get worse mileage. so it sounds to be a wash as far as money goes. but i geuss its less demand for foriegn oil and puts more money in the farmers pockets. corn has been around a 1.80 for along time, good for cattle feeders but bad for grain farmers! can you imagine raising 1.00 lb catlle on 1.80 corn!! cheap feed right there.

thats funny oneida, i heard the lub qualities are better in the bio deisel. haven't done the research or ran it myself but a couple guys i talked to around here say its better. time will tell. they don't tell you how bad ethanol is for seals, and rubber or plastic parts either but we all know it is.

glad Im not raising feeders..I do like the jump in corn price, dont know how the fuel pumps are going to like the biodiesel (soybean based) fuel. Ive heard of lubrication problems from using it.

All the truckers I've talked to who are using biodiesel say they are replacing their fuel pumps a lot more frequently. Most are replacing them at least once a month as opposed to every 4-6 months.

Maybe I need to get rid of the cows and start growing corn.

This was my original point. If everybody who grows beef were to turn their pastureland into corn producing land can you imagine what the price of beef would be? Or if the ethanol plants are willing to pay considerably more than the farmers, what will it drive the beef prices up to?

I know there are other feeds used but corn is a staple in livestock feed. Many other feeds are quite a bit more expensive.

Maybe if we could get cars to run on hot air we would really have something. With all the politicians doing " exploratory searches " to run for president there would be no shortage of hot air. Then we have the BS. Good source of methane. grin.gif
