Bowhntr
Ok guys. I'm probably going to humbly eat crow on this one but I got a question for ya'll. If you had to pick JUST between the 300 Win. Mag or the 300 WSM which would it be and why? I'm thinking about buying another rifle and it will probably be in the 300 family. Strut10
Re: Question for the OTPG I'd get the original 300 Win Mag (have two of them now). Reasons are: ...Factory ammo is more readily and widely available. ...If you reload, the 300 Win has more snot than the 300 WSM ...The theoretical weight/accuracy gain of the WSM's short action is prtty much a ruse in your typical, affordable sporter-weight rifle. iron buck
Re: Question for the OTPG Between the WSM & the 300 win mag....I'd take the 300 win mag. No need to contribute to the wealth of Jamison. And the 30 win mag is here to stay. The short mag deal has yet to run it's course. Maybe it stays. Maybe it just fades away. Bowhntr
Re: Question for the OTPG Strut10, Not really looking to fill a gap. I'm just really getting an itch to put something new in the gun cabinet. However, here is the reason I'm looking at the 300. I already own a 308 and 270, so I have two members of two of the most popular "parent" casings 308 and 30-06. I can move up or move back into 25 or 22 caliber. Secondly, my wife is really showing an interest in hunting now. So I can set my 270 up just as a deer rifle for her, my 308 as a deer rifle for my daughter, and since I handload I can cook up various loads for the 300 for anything from deer to moose and just rezero accodingly when I go after something that needs more punch. Strut10
Re: Question for the OTPG Gotcha. Sounds reasonable enough to me. Just remember........the word "need" is never a required justification for an OTPG member. "Want" will work just fine, though. Have you considered going any bigger......just to diversify your capabilities?? Bigger rounds can be loaded down, too...........if you think that's what you want to do (however, we at the OTPG do not encourage the watering down of magnum rounds........getting close to "cocoa ". Bowhntr
Re: Question for the OTPG Nah, not thinking about going any bigger. I honestly don't need or want any bigger. I don't like watering down loads either. What I mean by pulling one back is just loading a lighter bullet for smaller game. If I get a 300 I'll probably load 150's for deer and 180 partitions for bigger critters.
Canadian_Goose
Re: Question for the OTPG Might want to stay away from the 150's on deer unless it is made of solid copper. Even then with the high velocities this thing pumps out your looking at blowing out more than one shoulder. I shot two deer this year with a 165 grain and it still did serious serious damage. That has been my experience but I could be wrong.
Strut10
Re: Question for the OTPG [ QUOTE ] I honestly don't "need" or want any bigger. [/ QUOTE ] See???? There ya go.......... You're gonna need to adjust that sort of attitude before application to the OTPG is made.
Bowhntr
Re: Question for the OTPG Goose thanks for the info. With the velocities that we are talking about I'd probably shoot partitions or maybe that new Barnes Tungsten core bullet. Anything inside of two hundred yards I'd try neck shots anyway. Plus, this gun will be PRIMARILY an elk rifle but it will be my back up when the wife and the daughter want to use my other two. Strut, I missed your point earlier....got ya loud and clear now. All I know is I WANT that gun that goose posted in that other thread
Canadian_Goose
Re: Question for the OTPG You mean that pea shooter. You should see the one I'm making at home out of an old colvert and pipe cleaners. Too bad I will have to individually manufacture each round. Next time you see a deer send me the cordinates and we'll see how tough those North Carolina deer are.
tped
Re: Question for the OTPG I think I would go with the time honored 300 win mag. As Strut says you can get a little more out of it if you handload and since you don't "want" to go bigger the 300 win will provide everything you need for elk or moose or bears. The jury is still out on the 300WSM and since it is shot in most of the same rifles that the 300 win is - you might just as well stay with a classic. Since your 308 already fills the 30 caliber class - step on up to the 338 would be the real deal for the bigger stuff like moose and bears. terminator
Re: Question for the OTPG I own and love both. The 300 WSM seems to be a little more accurate than my 300 Win Mag, but as mentioned you have more space to fill in the 300 Win mag (SPACE 4 POWDER). A very good comparison of the two mentioned 300's would be like comparing the .308 Win with the 30-06.
bearcat
Re: Question for the OTPG Why not consider the .300 Remington Ultra Magnum? It is more powerful than both the .300 Win. Mag. and the .300 WSM. If you handload, brass and bullets are not a problem. In my case I don't handload, so factory ammo offerings for the .300 RUM are not that plentiful. Between the two Winchester magnums, I would defineatly go with the .300 Win. Mag. Silver Member #5 ......... Off the porch gang.
