HarvDog
I'm starting to take interest in the AK-47 and may even consider buying one. Any thoughts on what to stay away from and/or recommendations on what to get?
wtnhunt
Re: AK-47 Guess depending on what you want it for they could be fun guns Harv. I have a norinco sks that shoots the same round 7.62X39. Not by any means a real accurate rifle, but I did kill my first deer with it. Ammo can be bought pretty cheap for these guns still. Honestly though if I personally was looking into getting something in a caliber close to the 7.62 in a semi auto, think I would look more closely at an AR chambered in .308. AKs are fun to shoot also. I know the WASR models are suppose to be well made AKs. AKs are similar to ARs in that they are easy to accesorize and kinda cheap to shoot. Adjam5
Re: AK-47 Harv...I have had a few AK's and variants. My crown jewel is a pre 86 ban AKM. Norinco. Before all the bull started. Most of the AK's that are out there are stamped steel, and many are eastern block leftovers. This is not a bad thing. The real AK's are too. HK also makes guns from sheetmetal stamping, so that process is a good one. I tend to think that the AK receivers made from billet steel are the more durable ones. My friend owns a Bulgarian AK, billet receiver. It is very durable. We have put that gun thru all kinds of shooting and it held up with NO issues. I have had a post-ban MAK-90 blow up in my face( I didnt get hurt) the breech block broke and could not hold the bolt when the cartridge went off and parts went flying everywhere. That happend under firing it with the Hellfire. It could not handle the sustained fire, it stressed and blew up. My pre ban gun help up fine under the same firing conditions. That gun was cheaply made...not inexpensive...CHEAP. Many AK's to be compliant have to be assembled with a certain amount of domestic parts. They have come down in price a great deal and are cheaper than AR's. It has virtually the same ballistics as the 30/30. If you look at one, don't expect the quality fit and finish you'll normally find in a American made gun. Some domestic gun makers are making the AK here to avoid the BS that comes with importing weapons and parts. www.interordnance.com is one such company. Their AK model starts at $350. The Romanian imports are about the same price too. The ammo is about $175 for a 1000 rounds. Don't expect minute of angle accuracy out of the AK, it is designed around reliability and cost of manufacture. I'm sure accuracy was in there somewhere? The Dragonov is the sniper AK. Different caliber too. An old SKS might serve you better and it is better made in IMO. All billet reveiver and shoots the same 7.62x39 cartridge and is only like $125 or so. American made/assembled AK's will have brand names and the rest are eastern bloc military leftovers with civilian/semi trigger groups. The Yugo and Polish AK's seem to be fetching a higher price as of late. Most likely higher quality and all matching parts. Thats something you'd want. A matching # gun Harv. Look at www.ohiorapidfire.com for some info too. Hope this helps some.
robk
Re: AK-47 russian or chinese are the two i would look at. the russian of course being the best of the bunch. in nam we found that the russians worked better than the chicom ak's they were better built as well. the russians cost more but you get what you pay for rob k
HarvDog
Re: AK-47 Still shopping... I came across this Romanan AK made by vector/lancaster through Altantic Firearms . Any thoughts?
Adjam5
Re: AK-47 From the website it looks like a good AK. Most likely with an American reciever and Romanian parts. One big plus is, the scope rail is mounted already to the receiver. Most AK's do not come with rails for scope mounting. That price seems a bit high, but the finish and fit looks like it is much better than the chinese copies. Wait til you get one and see how simple the workings are in this gun. All sheetmetal stampings that are extremely tough. I'd go for this one Harv. Good Luck!
HarvDog
Re: AK-47 I guess I should be considering the Saiga and SKS as well, huh?
wtnhunt
Re: AK-47 Like I said before Harv, I have a norinco sks. The gun is somewhat accurate and is fun to shoot, but would not compare it accuracy wise to a bolt deer rifle like the model 700, as there is really no comparison. Been tempted to put a scope on that rifle, the mounts for them usually come with a cheapy scope.
Guest Clay008
Re: AK-47 The Siaga is an interesting weapon. The one I fired was a 12 gauge and we were at the skeet range. The skeet did not stand a chance. I think we had a five round mag. There is not much difference between the Saiga and the AK but, I would go with the AK over the Saiga. I have seen the SKS fired and they would be a neat rifle to have and they are dirt cheap. I think they are longer than AKs though.
ZooBear
Re: AK-47 Look on the same website under AR 15s at the Olympic A-1. I think you would be much happier with it. I have found them for $549.00 if you shop around.

Honestly I think either an AK or an AR would be great to own because they are both fun to shoot and, they both have their disadvantages and advantages. Adjam5
Re: AK-47 A buddy of mine just bought at a gun show here in NY yesterday a Romanian AK WASR for $375 with 2 30 rd mags. sling and cleaning kit. That is a good buy. Considering in a few years when the democraps pick up speed...these weapons will be things of the past.

Adjam5
Re: AK-47 Also, when you do pick up an AK, I think you will ...you got the bug. Get a broken shell extractor. It is a collet that is shaped like a 7.62x39 cartridge and exerts pressure on the inside of a broken case in the chamber and allows that broken cartridge wall to be removed with a cycling of the bolt by hand. I have had it happen 3 times to me while shooting. The steel case ammo(wolf), that was made for this gun; had the shoulder of the cartridge ripped from the wall by the extractor making the gun useless being unable to chamber a round. I had some advice previously from a friend about broken cases in the chamber, so I had the broken shell extractor on hand. It is an extremely valuable tool. Otherwise the gun that can't shoot is a paperweight, not a gun. I'll see if I have the pics of the broken shells, and post 'em here and how violent of a extraction takes place with the AK. HarvDog
Re: AK-47 I've learned that the WASRs (by Century) tend to be a bit lesser quality. Adjam5
Re: AK-47 Both seem to be well made rifles, as per the ad with current engineered parts. I have seen the Vectors in the Shotgun News and thats all. I have never heard of the Lancaster. Recoil buffer is a plus, thats like a $15 item. Pre ban style is even better. The Lancaster looks like a all domestic gun and the Vector is a parts gun on a US receiver. I'm sure either will function fine. It is on the high end $$$ for a AK style rifle, but the quality of manufacture is there and thats what you are paying for. A billet receiver AK is by far the most durable. But don't worry, the sheetmetal stamped one will do just fine too. BTW...I heard at a gun show over the weekend that military ball ammo is getting harder to get for ALLL calibers. So start shopping that stuff too. www.cheaperthandirt.com has some good buys.
