National Anthem being sung in Spanish

Ok...first off...I hardly ever spend time in the Politics and Religion room. However, I have received this email nearly 10 times during the past week and wanted to get some thoughts from everyone.

Here is the email:

[ QUOTE ]

I am sorry but after hearing they want to sing the National Anthem in Spanish enough is enough. Nowhere did they sing it in Italian, Polish, Irish (Celtic), German or any other language because of immigration.

It was written by Francis Scott Key and should be sung word for word the way it was written. The news broadcasts even gave the translation -- not even close. Sorry if this offends anyone but this is MY COUNTRY - IF IT IS YOUR COUNTRY SPEAK UP -- please pass this along.

I am not against immigration -- just come through like everyone else. Get a sponsor; have a place to lay your head; have a job; pay your taxes, live by the rules AND LEARN THE LANGUAGE as all other immigrants have in the past -- and GOD BLESS AMERICA!

PART OF THE PROBLEM

Think about this: The politically correctness police (i.e. Holly weird) and the media have brainwashed us into thinking we should tolerate other peoples' disrespect to our nation, otherwise you are being racially prejudiced.

It is Time for America to Speak up.

[/ QUOTE ]

Let me start by saying that I understand and agree with the views by so many of my family members and friends regarding the immigration issues. This email message implies that singing our National Anthem in any other language besides English is disrespectful. Quite honestly, I don’t understand why? Changing the actual words and meaning maybe but translating it to a different language doesn’t change the meaning. How can this then be disrespectful? Aren’t they instead honoring our country by singing our National Anthem? I am certainly NOT one who is going to tolerate disrespect of my country, the freedom, or symbols I served to protect, preserve, and enjoy. But I just don’t see the problem here. Maybe I’m missing something…

Re: National Anthem being sung in Spanish

I would say you are missing something. I'm not bashing you but just stop and look at this for a moment. First, this is America and our language is English. Our anthem is in English, sing it that way. If and I mean IF one truly wanted to become part of our country they would learn our language, how to speak it, and how to sing our anthem. In short they would assimilate themselves to OUR culture not try to to ramrod the culture they left down our throats. I'll hush by asking this question...Do you think we could move to China, Turkey, Afganistan, or any other country and survive if we didn't learn that language? When in Rome do as the Romans do........

Re: National Anthem being sung in Spanish

English is americas official language now. When in The U.S, speak english.

There should be no press 1 for english.

Remember that.

Sorry I know thats a harsh opinion. But trust me living around detroit and ann arbor michigan, sometimes u see more people speaking other languages than english.

I want my kids to grow up in an english speaking country. Not an arabic, or spanish speaking one.

Re: National Anthem being sung in Spanish

I certainly agree that people who choose to LIVE in America should learn and speak English.

Again, I don't believe that is the issue here. It sounds like people are upset because they are choosing to sing our National Anthem in another language...not saying it needs to be translated to or be available in Spanish.

A quote from a friend of mine: "Freedom of Speech makes room for the National Anthem and most anything to be demonstrated in the preferred way of the beholder."

Re: National Anthem being sung in Spanish

The fact that they are doing it tells me that they don't respect our customs. How do yo think they would feel with a picture of the vergin Mary in a tube top waiving an American flag.

The "Star Spangled Banner" is a part of our countries culture that should not be taken lightly or changed. To do so is disrespectful and unamerican. Look at the backlash the Rosanne Barr got for butchering it. I find changing the language and the words (which the poorly translated peice of gabage does) to be equily distastefull.

If they want to sing a national anthem in spanish I cordially invite them to do it far south from here.

As far as Canada goes, it's a two language nation. This is not. mad.gif

Re: National Anthem being sung in Spanish

The National Anthem of this country should be sung in English primarily and if someone wishes they can translate it to whatever language for their own purposes. If they want it translated, to other languages, they can use the alternate languages on their televisions or whatever. Too much in this country is getting away from what it once was. The idea of those who want to be offended for anything they can be, has gotten way too far out of hand.

We need to quit making exceptions and changes for everyone who cries, and let them get over it and learn to deal with the way this country is or get out if they dont like it and think it is better elsewhere.

Re: National Anthem being sung in Spanish

I knew I'd hear that. But I don't care if someone sings the song in mandrin, arabic, or any other language for that matter as long as they do it respectfully and without reservations. But I suppose the fact that I am making this statement verifies that I am living in Canada (multicultural) as opposed to the US (which is considered a melting pot).

Re: National Anthem being sung in Spanish

Singing the American National Anthem is a bastardization of "our" culture. While we are a nation of immigrants, the years have established our customs and those coming here should adapt. We would have to if we went to their country.

If we tried to bastardize their customs and cultures there would be heck (edited for buckee - lol) to pay.

but RESPECT, which she didn't do, it was rude and disrespectful!

In my eye the lack of respect that she gave it was equil to the lack or respect for the song in it's original form whether it be language or translation.

Great point! Look at all of the translations of the Bible:

21st Century King James Version

American Standard Version

Amplified Bible

Contemporary English Version

Darby Translation

Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition.

English Standard Version

Holman Christian Standard Bible

King James Version

New American Standard Bible

New International Reader's Version

New International Version

New International Version - UK

New King James Version

New Life Version

New Living Translation

The Message

Today's New International Version

Wycliffe New Testament

Young's Literal Translation

...and these are just a handfull of the English ones.

The difference to me is that the bible is meant for the whole world. Our national anthem is not. Different translations of the bible are meant to have a more accurate understanding for the reader. The "interpritation" of the national anthem changes the text and therefor the meaning behind it.

If someone changed the bible the way they have changed our anthem it would be call heracy.

Re: National Anthem being sung in Spanish

Really think if they want to sing along in spanish at a game or whatever that is fine, they have the freedom so long as they are legal to sing it however they wish. Expecting it to be changed for them however is wrong. The original version of it should remain the same untranslated PERIOD.

Why should we go to a game, like a football game and want to listen to the announcer in spanish or the song sung in spanish when we are in America where the primary language is English? Makes no sense, we should not have to or be expected to learn other languages to accommodate others who are coming here!!!!
