Turkeygirl
when you need new arrows? I have Beman ICS 500 so they basically don't get bent like aluminum but is there a certain point when you need to replace them? I noticed on a couple, near the tip end of the arrow, the black finish or whatever is on them is wearing off a little from going in the target. Not sure if that is of any concern or not. All these new graphite/carbon arrows seem to last along while, but I thought it was a good question to ask. Thanks!
unioncountyslayer
Re: How do you know... Good question Ruth, I just switched to carbons a year ago, so I don't think I've shot them enough to replace. Look forward to replies to this one. PAstringking
Re: How do you know... with carbons you can get them checked for straightness but other then that...usually when i want new ones. i really like my CE Maxima350's
dg
Re: How do you know... When they quit grouping like they use to, get some more. Whether it's the arrow or your mind, it doesn't matter now does it? It's amazing how new arrows group so well.
wtnhunt
Re: How do you know... [ QUOTE ] I only replace em if they get broken or lost, or damaged beyond use [/ QUOTE ] Same here. Have bought 2 dozen carbons since I started shooting carbons about 4 or 5 years ago. Still have I think 21 of them, half a dozen of them are in the box and have still never been shot. Guest BriarRidgePlots
Re: How do you know... My camo carbons have the finish wore off for a couple of inches back from the insert, nothing to worry about unless you just don't like the look! They still go through critters just fine. hutchies
Re: How do you know... Flex them before you shoot them. If any cracks or splinters trash them. Otherwise they are still good to go.
Leo
Re: How do you know... Flexing them is a good idea for carbons. Sometimes you hear cracks you don't see. Cracks or splinters they are done. Junk em, you can't fix them. A very small crack can instantly turn into a big problem. They won't necessarily break the next shot but they will eventually fail, so don't risk it. Some wear on the finish isn't usually something to be concerned about unless you feel fibers where the wear is. If that happens they are gonna crack and soon. Tony
Re: How do you know... while im shooting my carbons, i spin them in my hand. it can tell you a lot if they are still straight enough. how i do it is i rest the tip lightly in my left hand, then i rest the arrow shaft near the fletching against my index finger and thumb nails of my right hand. i them blow on the fletching. this will induce spin in the arrow and you will be able to feel any wobble of the tip in the palm of your left hand. i do not like to feel any wobble at all. if it wobbles its gone... checking for cracks is alos a good idea. when i pull my arrows i always clean each tip off. this allows me to do a visual check each time i shoot them. also dont forget the nock end. this end can take more abuse sometimes than the tip end. [/ QUOTE ] I agree with Tony. Except I use an arrow spinner. Before and after each shooting session I spin the arrow and if one wobbles it is junk. I also check them for cracks. Each arrow I pull I slightly flex a couple time and look at the nock and insert ends. If there any question as to if the arrow is damaged or not, I junk it. I don't want to end up with a Gold Tip through my arm when shooting.
