injured coon

This evening our dog was barking so I found her barking at a coon on the ground.I thought the coon was in a trap but it wasn't and is very weak and barely able to stand, the coon has a small hole in her belly that looks like a .22 hole.I petted her with a stick at first and she's really tame I think this was someone's pet coon. With gloves on I picked her up by the tail and put her in a small cage in the shop with a heat lamp.

Aren't there places that work with injured wild animals?

if someone shot her there is nothing you can do ... ASPCA will work on the coon ... but I seriously doubt it was a pet ... thats just how they get when they are about dead ... the best thing you can do is put it out of it misery ... its not right to let it suffer like that ...

Dang guys I was hoping she could be helped. frown.gif

Yeah it's tough to see an animal suffer like that. I know Oneida man kept a wild raccoon that was abandoned from it's mother as a pet, for a couple years I think. Lived in the house, got along with the dog and cats. Not that i'm suggesting you keep it. If it's injured, the best favour you could do for it is to put it out of its misery.

Re: injured coon

I guess there are no wildlife refuge in your area eh?We have one here where you can take injured wildlife.

I guess you have three options.

1- take it to the SPCA, and they will most likely charge you to turn it over to them.

2- take it to a vet, and see if it can be helped (you pay the vet costs)

3- Put it down yourself

frown.gif Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Re: injured coon

The coon is still alive and has ate some cat food.I'm waiting to hear from someone in Tulsa that takes in raccoons.I'm wondering if she is injured from a gun shot or maybe the dog bit her on the stomach.I've only picked her up once with gloves on but she's not foaming at the mouth or anything like that she just licks that wound and sleeps.

Shoot it again in the head. Skin it out and take it to the fur buyer. If it is atleast a decent hide it will be worth a few bucks. Whyyy would you pick up a wounded animal, don't you know they bite when scared. That is just as bad as people going to Yellow Stone or the Appallacian Park and putting their kids on the backs of bears to take pictures or trying to feed a 2000 lbs buffalo. Use some common sense!!!!

Re: injured coon

Duh! mad.gif I was raised out in the country and have handled wild animals before along with trapping, coon hunting and raising them, give me a break!

The Tulsa Zoo took the coon.

This coon never growled, snarled or tried to bite,I still think it was someone's pet.She drank water and ate a 1/2 can of cat food this morning.

The vet at the Tulsa Zoo is taking care of the coon now,I'm sure they will make the right decisions.

Cool, It's refreshing to see someone who cares for wildlife, and doesn't just take the easy way out, when dealing with a sick creature. I've taken care of a few sick animals in my life, and although some of them didn't make it, some of them did, and it was rewarding to see them returned to the wild. wink.gif

My hat's off to you for your efforts.
