NY Deer Hunters

Need to chop that herd down even further? ........ Well, here is a guy who has figured out a few new ways that he would like to add to the arsenal of the anti-deer forces.

Some legislator named Senator William Larkin from Orange County has introduced three bills that would create: A)an additional late deer hunting season that would run from Dec. 20 through January 31, B) Allow for a commercial deer hunting season, and C) allow property owners to take deer that are causing severe over-browsing of lands used in agriculture. How this last one differs from the current systems of agriculture deer slaughter, I'm not sure. The article that I was reading was a bit short on details. The one that really jumped out at me was the attempt to establish commercial deer hunting and the sales of venison from wild deer for profit. Yes, I know the sales of publicly owned furbearers has been accepted and going on for years, but somehow this seems a bit more dramatic to me and would seem to be more prone to promoting poaching and other misuse of the herd.

To me, each of these bills seem like one of the many that get introduced every year and are so ridiculous that they never go anywhere, so I wouldn't get too upset about them. However it is interesting that anyone would even be proposing such a thing. It just continues to show how the hunters continue to lose influence and the anti-deer forces continue to grow in influence.

I just thought you all might like to know what some of your legislators are up to.

That is interesting. If I am not mistaken, sales of venison in this state are strictly prohibited, kind of assumed it would be that way elsewhere as well.

I know plenty of people out there during Shotgun that Drive deer from sun up to sunset every day, I tend to shy away from that I can see one or two deer drives but not everyday.

Re: NY Deer Hunters

Don't get your knickers in a bundle over this commercial hunting of deer. It will never happen. Our Legislators just entered a bill, A734 to be exact, to stop the commercial fishing of many species. It is expected to pass. Do you think they will pass commercial deer hunting right after they ban commercial fishing? I don't think so. Some Legislator is just blowing smoke. It will never make it to the floor.

RangerClay-

I agree that this bill is so far off the wall that I would be real surprised if it goes anywhere. However, the whole tone of this sort of thing even being proposed in the first place bothers me a bit. This guy must have gotten the idea from somewhere and must think there is at least some support for it. I know that in recent years, the anti-deer lobby has been getting a lot more powerful and influencial as we hunters seem to be losing that power and influence. It just seems to be a strange new way of thinking that fits well into the recent changes in regulations and management attitudes that are designed to increase the effectiveness of hunters as a tool for severely reducing the herd size.

I just hope that this idea of market hunting doesn't start to get support from some of the many anti-deer forces out there.

At the very least, this bill points out just how far these anti-deer alliances are willing to go to get rid of those "pesky critters".
