Shaun_300
Re: 22 cal bullets Dad used to reload pretty sweet loads for the .22-250 a while back. He used 38.5 grains of Hodsen BLC-2 behind a 52gr Hornady hollowpoint boat-tail match bullets. Those loads are VERY accurate rounds and VERY deadly on groundhogs and wolves. Strut10
Re: 22 cal bullets I'll 2nd the 52 gr. Hornady HPBTM bullets. I load them over a "book max" charge of IMR-3031 for 4080 fps in my .220 Swift. From my unaltered Ruger 77V Mark I, I've gotten 5-shot 100 yards groups in the .4's and 3 shot groups in the .1's!!!! The match configuration gives the bullets a hard nose and they don't seem to blow up too violently.

WaCoyote
Re: 22 cal bullets abster71, Where did you hit it? I've used Speer and Hornady HPBTM extensively on yotes in a 22-250 and NEVER had any kind of prob. Maybe you just hit bone? Hollow Point Match will exit on a broadside but shouldn't make to big a hole. Frontals will not exit. I supect you made a grazing shot or a neck or spine shot? No bullet will help with a hit in those areas. I use a lot of 40 grainers too. but a bad hit with them or a shoulder blade shot is messier than with the HPBTM bullets. WaCoyote
Re: 22 cal bullets [ QUOTE ] I got him low where the belly and ribs meet was a nasty sight intestines hanging out 3 ft one friend said the match bullets are not good for pelts in that they blow up very rapidly he's using ballistic tip hornady's I 've used them alsodidn't see much difference on prairie dogs haven't shot enough yotes with them do get much feedback myself [/ QUOTE ] That explains it. The plastic tips bullets are good too but after trying them all I always seem to come back to the BTHPM bullets. I've had 1000 people tell me they arent fur friently and I beg to differ. A chest shot will not exit. A broadside will but the hole isn't big enough to worry about usually. Theres always exceptions. But I have had any probs with a BTHPM in the last 3 years. The this year I've blown up two dogs. One was with my 22-250 and a 40 grn barnes vlc. It was a neck hit and the exit hole was enormous. #2 was a .223 V-max spine hit. The bullet splashed and the entry was as big as a softball. Last year I had a splash with a B-tip. I hit the shoulder and once again had a softball sized hole. I'm done messing around with the poly's. They shoot great but no better than the HPBT match bullets. The poly's are just too explosive with a bad hit. I'll only keep a few around for when I'm in Bobcat country. I just don't think that any bullet will cure the damage with a hit like you describe. I bet the poly tips would have even been worse. They are DESIGNED to blow up.

But thanks for helping us figure out a more fur friendly .22 cal bullet. LOL.
Squirrelhunter91
Re: 22 cal bullets I haven't fullly gotten into handloading just yet, but intend to very soon. But this year I will be shooting 50gr Vmax bullets out of my AR-15.
