Guest Hunter36
Just wondering if anyone here spears from a dark house? If so hows the year going? I spear and have had a good year so far nothin big but 9 northerns, 1 sucker, and 3 eel pout in four days. For three days straight I saw over 100 fish a day. If you dont do it know I recommend trying it. It def. beats lookin at a bobber all day. I'll post some pictures soon.

muggs
Re: Dark House Spearing? Don't mean to come down on ya man, but I'm really against this sorta thing. Spearing, snagging, and bowfishing just don't see to sporting to me.

Guest Hunter36
Re: Dark House Spearing? Andrea A dark house is a fish house without windows keeps the light out so you can more easily see in the water and so you dont spook the fish. I cut a 3 ft x 4ft hole in the ice. Its like watching a big screen T.V. Muggs, how is spearing through the ice any less sporting than angling through the ice. Just want to know your reasoning. muggs
Re: Dark House Spearing? I guess its because you're sighting the fish, and than spearing it...as opposed to coaxing a fish into taking a bait, and then fighting it with a light line or something like that. But, I'm not saying its wrong, or anthing, just not really my sorta thing. Actually, the only thing I'll do is set one tip-up when ice fishing...and I even have mixed feelings about that when I do it.
Guest Andrea
Re: Dark House Spearing? Gigging is a blast. You wade up a creek in WINTER time with a lantern and a gig. The suckers are running upstream and you can gig them if they'll hold still long enough for you. GOOD EATIN!!!!!

[/ QUOTE ] i am really against it also, cause when i fish up in wisconsin, because of the indians who do alot of spearfishing up there, i will go out and catch a nice size musky or pike, about 1 and 5 fish at some of the lakes i fish, you will bring a musky or pike in and it will have spear marks all on it from the indians missing them, and that just ruins a nice looking fish
Guest Hunter36
Re: Dark House Spearing? Im pretty sure most natives are not spearing throught the ice and in Minnesota you cant spear musky anyways, and whats the difference in ruining the looks of a fish and having one swallow the hook or catching it with a hook in the gills. I will invite Muggs and Du man to try it with me and see how sporting it is. And besides just spotting a fish and spearing it. I get to decide to try and spear the fish I want and avoid accidently killing a fish I am not going to eat or dont want to keep. Trust me I dont spear a fish unless I am sure I can quickly and humanly kill it. 90% of the fish I spear die in seconds. Yes a couple have shook off the spear but how many fish have been gill hooked or swallowed the hook and broke the line. By the way DU man I've seen deer with arrows sticking out of them doesnt mean I'm againts bow hunting. just a thought!!
coles
Re: Dark House Spearing? we tried it once about 2 weeks ago. sat there all day and only saw one perch about 4 inces long swim by. the guy i went with has been doing it for years and the only fish he has seen was one that his brother speared. so who knows. and when we went out we put out about 30 tip ups. muggs
Re: Dark House Spearing? Another huge reason, and one I forgot to mention earlier, is that it kills the fish. I try to throw back 98% of the fish I catch, with the exception of walleye and perch, and I never take more than I'll use.
DU_man_84
Re: Dark House Spearing? [ QUOTE ] and whats the difference in ruining the looks of a fish [/ QUOTE ] well the first musky i ever caught awhile back was legal size and i wanted to get it mounted but i didnt cause it had about 6 different marks on from spear fisherman, ruined a great mounter
Guest Hunter36
Re: Dark House Spearing? Yeah muggs thats why I like to spear because I can take the fish that I want to eat and watch tons of other fish species. More about the experience and watching the fish than actually spearing them. That kinda is the ideal behind it and anyone that does it should only be spearing fish that they plan on eating. The same concept is behind any hunting/fishing that some one does. I guess i am not seeing the difference behind this and fishing. You can't guarentee that when you fishing you are going to be able to catch a keeper every time, but you can gurantee that you are trying to spear the correct fish. You also can't gurantee that every fish you catch on a line is going to live when you try to get the hook out. Don't think i have heard a good reason why someone would be against it. As far as it scaring the fish. To me it adds character and if you are only fishing for that wall mounter than you may be doing it for the wrong reason. Also, probably 90% of fish mounts done today aren't the actual fish. Just my 2 cents.
jbeck
Re: Dark House Spearing? Let me get this straight, You sit on the ice in a house and watch what swims past. Can you use a bow to do this? I'm just wondering, cause i know lot of guys that use this same tactic on whitetail. I think if I didn't have anything else to do I could be talked into this one. LOL

Outdoor_Guy
Re: Dark House Spearing? It sounds very similar to sitting in a tree, watching what passes by, and waiting for the whitetail that you want. No problem with fishing that way. Guest BriarRidgePlots
Re: Dark House Spearing? It's only legal in Mi, Wis and Min, anyhow and in at least one of em allows residents only. It's a tradition, and no different than deer hunting. I like to shoot nice deer and catch nice fish but, I hunt to eat!! Are you sure that the scars on the fish wasn't from another bigger badder fish?? To each his own! [/ QUOTE ] I agree 100% Its the same thing as deer hunting, only your fish hunting. How many deer do you"spear" with an arrow and throw back into the woods? Absolutely no difference what so ever. When I fish, I fish for the filet, not to throw it back. I think it would be fun to go spearing myself.
Guest Hunter36
Re: Dark House Spearing? Thanx for all of those out there with an open mind and who see the sport and challenge in it. If you guys ever get the chance do it. Its a pretty good rush when a 20lb northern swims in. I've also had a 30+ pound musky come through which was neat to watch. PICTURES COMING THIS WEEKEND!!! Randy
Re: Dark House Spearing? I have too say, I have no problem with spearing through the ice. Out in a boat during the spawn with high powered spotlights well, that's a different story.
