I feel horrible

A few hours ago, I stopped at a truck stop in Livingston Alabama to get a bite to eat. I parked my truck in the nearly empty lot and climbed down. As I walked to the Burger King on the premises, I saw a very skinny black and white dog, probably a stray, it just looked like it hadn't eaten in a while. I could see it's ribs clearly.

When I got inside and placed my order, I added on 1 plain hamburger, just meat and bun for the dog, because, as hard as I act sometimes, I'm just an old softy when it comes to dogs. I went back outside and couldn't find the dog. I looked all around the truck and trailer- no dice. I figured it had wandered back into the woods behind the truck stop. I spent a few minutes looking with no luck and decided I needed to leave. I unwrapped the burger and sat it in the grass next to where the dog was when I pulled in just in case I scared it off and it were to come back.

I climbed into my truck, released the brake, put it in 3rd gear and started rolling... I think you know what's coming next, so I won't even type it.

I got back out of the truck and luckily it seemed to have been killed quickly with little suffering. I gathered it up and carried it into the woods a few feet. I just wish I had some sort of shovel or anything to dig with. I hated leaving it out like that, especially not knowing if it was someone's pet that had wandered off. I haven't felt this bad in a long, long time. frown.gif

Re: I feel horrible

Aw man. I know how ya feel. I appreciate your compassion for the dog though, and you tried to help. I hope it doesn't haunt you too long though. Like Muff said, you may have done it a favor instead of dying of starvation in a couple days anyway. I remember a couple dogs that looked like they had been dumped in the country that followed me along the road while I drove in the tractor. They were skinny, and trying to get me to stop, but I didn't want them to follow me home and get in a fight with out dog either. On my way back with a loaded bale-wagon, I brought a li'l box of dog food, but they were gone. This was several years back, but I still remember it.

Keep your chin up, try not to let it drag you down, and remember that you tried. Hope your day goes better!

Re: I feel horrible

I guess that God puts things in our lives only for those that are worthy of these actions. Who better to end that dogs suffering than someone with a heart as big as yours. Feel honored that you were strong enough to handle the burden and seen fit to, although unknowingly, be strong.

Re: I feel horrible

My sister used to have a little Yorky. It was a very good little dog and was treated like a little queen. She was groomed regularly and ate better than most families. When she got old my sister did everything to keep her health up. She had bad allergies, her kidneys were starting to fail and she had arthritis so bad that she could barely walk.

One day as she was getting ready to go home from work. (she has her own CPA office) Fi Fi ran out the door like she was a pup. My sister hadn't seen her run for 2 years. She ran right out into the middle of the road and stopped right in front of the wheels of an oncoming panel truck. You could imagine the result.

My sister said it was almost like FiFi wanted to die and she knew she would never be put down.

Can't really say for sure, but maybe the dog was just ready to go. frown.gif

Be glad it didn't suffer and that someone was there that cared.
