Re: Deer Hunting with a .22cal Rifle

I think a 222 swift would do the job although like the other guys have said before...you need to know the gun and be able to place your shot where you want it. A 222 swift is a handy little round for small to medium game...deer being the larger of the "medium" game. I would feel much better about a 243 though. There isn't much difference in the felt recoil.

Re: Deer Hunting with a .22cal Rifle

I am not certain as to why folks think a .22 cal is not effective on whitetail. I have killed several with my .223 and most dropped in their tracks. Granted, bullet selection and shot placement are key. And maybe a .22 hornet is a bit light , but for the most part .22 CAL IS EFFECTIVE ON WHITETAIL. As far as it being illegal due to spotlighters using them and wounding deer, well I don't think that is reason to discredit the effectiveness of a caliber. I think that a small caliber is not for everyone, but in no way does that make it an uneffective round for whitetail.I personally know of more deer lost to .30 cals than to .22 cals.

Illegal here in Oklahoma,,too many deer wounded and not recovered by spotlighters with small caliber

Correction. .22 RIMFIRE is illegal...not a .22 centerfire. It just states that the bulet must be at least 55grain soft-nosed or hollow point bullet havin an overall cartrige case length of 1 1/4 inches or longer.

I will say that I think a .22 cal can kill a deer effectively. I killed a deer in '05 with a .22-205. Right behind the shoulder, ran 20 yards and fell over dead as a hammer. What is it that kills the deer?? The size of the bullet, the speed?? What makes it INEFFECTIVE, other than "it's too small"? I think the shooter makes it ineffective.
