Any stone fireplaces?

Anyone ever install or have installed a stone fireplace? We are finishing a significant section of our basement and putting in a vent-less propane fireplace. I'm looking for ideas for some stone for the hearth, mantle, and around the fireplace up the wall as well. Any websites, pictures, etc. that you think could help me, please post away! wink.gif

Thanks,

Re: Any stone fireplaces?

Tom, years ago my step father and I put stone facing on a fireplace. The stone was real cut stones and you put your mortar on and placed the stones where you wanted them. It turned out looking really nice. I have not seen the type of stones we used anywhere since. That was probably around 1979 or 1980.

I was a stone mason for several years before I came to work here at the fire dpeartment. Are you wanting cultured or natural stone? Are you wanting a "stick on" veneer or a stacked look? Dry stack or pack joint? There are a lot of decisions to make. The biggest thing though is if you are going to use a stacked type of veneer is to be sure you have an adequate footing. A standard fireplace in a room with an 8 foot ceiling takes about 1 1/2 tons to do depending on stone type and pattern. Here are a couple of photos of a veneer and hearth that I done in my old house. Sorry the flash washed out some of the color on a couple.

Re: Any stone fireplaces?

We used the cultured stone on ours. For the mantle we used a 14" wide slice of a tree with the bark still on the outside edge and milled on the 3 others, and for the supports for it, we used some 8" diameter logs. I like it a lot and have never seen another like it. I'll get some pix up later.

Re: Any stone fireplaces?

Are you set on a ventless? I did some research because me and the wife will be putting in a vented fireplace once they drill the gas wells and I get free gas. Anyways...the downfall to the ventless...they tend to fog up windows and I don't mean moisture you can wipe off...fog up inbetween the glass and ruin them. I've heard and read story's about folks getting headaches/sick from fumes not venting outside. Guess that depends on the size of the room?

The biggest thing that I got from the ventless that I didn't like is it uses oxygen from inside the room/house. So if your dog comes inside from outside wet...the smell will be much worse...same for any smell inside your home...cooking etc...

I'm going to go with a vented just to be on the safe side!
