Guest Layne0878
Im after an all round gun from coyote to kansas deer. I thinking of a .243 or a .25-06. I dont know much about rifles. Im only allowed shotguns in Ohio. I will be going out west to hunt coyote, and I am not sure which gun to would be better to use. Also I am wondering who is the better manufacterer of rifles, and what would you prefer for coyote hunting up to mule deer?
Guest shortmag
Re: Which gun?? A 243 wssm would be a really nice round for the job you are after. It is super hot and flat shoting with very litle felt recoil. Plenty of power to take a deer as well as plenty of speed and the right trajectory to take out the varmit of your choice. You only have to adjust your projectile weight to the type of hunting that you will be doing. Use the lower weights for the varmits and something in the 95 gr. catagory for the deer. Remember that a well placed shot is worth its weight in gold!
AJ
Re: Which gun?? Either cartridge will work well for you. The .243 Win will be a little easier on the hides of a coyote if pelts are what you are after. The 25-06 has limited factory ammo for varmints (90 gr) but it does have some decent big game bullet choices. The .243 Win will kill any deer when the proper bullets are choosen. I like the 55-75 gr bullets for varmints/predators and the 95-100 gr bullet for deer sized game. As for a good high quality rifle manufacturer, look at the Kimber or Cooper line of rifles. The standard mass produced Rem, Savage, Browning, Howa, etc are all ok quality guns.
wtnhunt
Re: Which gun?? Welcome to the forums. The .243 would probably also be my first choice.
johnf
Re: Which gun?? I've got both and love the performance of the two choices. For what you want I would lean toward the 243. You will find a ton more choices when it comes to factory ammo and it has plenty of power for deer out to 300 yards.
robk
Re: Which gun?? i like a 243 for that kind of shooting. i can shoot from deer down to whatever and use more than enough bullet weight to get he job done quickly and humanely rob k
Bowhntr
Re: Which gun?? Might take a look at the 257 Roberts. It is a tad heavier for the deer and can be loaded down for the varmints. It is a pretty decent little caliber.
LETMGROW
Re: Which gun?? I'd dump all the choices and go with a .308.
Shaun_300
Re: Which gun?? All those calibers will do good on coyotes and deer. For the deer I'd go a little bigger than a .24 caliber. .260, 7mm-08 or .308 would be my top 3 choices to choose from.
Guest Xen
Re: Which gun?? i dunno, some of those coyotes can be pretty big... i'd go with a .300 win mag

[ QUOTE ] i like a 243 for that kind of shooting. i can shoot from deer down to whatever and use more than enough bullet weight to get he job done quickly and humanely rob k [/ QUOTE ] might also say i do have my 308 to shoot as well but i am using it for certain animals and it is cheaper to buy and reload the 24 cal which will knock down anythign from varmits to preds to deer and other thin skinned animals. sometimes money is part of the choice. don't get me wrong i love my 308 and i have great confidence out ranges beyond 400 yards and would use it for longer distances and have done so. been thinking if i can't handle my 35 whelen until after surgery i will take the 308 on my hog hunt in may if all goes well lol. i used a 308 in nam as well as my 16 and i can say this if i had the seals 7.62x51 in nam i would of been much happier with it over my 5.56 308 is still the king of all rounds in my opinion rob k
bowana
Re: Which gun?? I like the 25 cal's for this type of work 257 Roberts 25-06 and 25-06 Ackley improved 257 Weatherby Mag The Weatherby 'accumark is as good as it gets for a factory rifle, but its expensive. Since your from Ohio, you may want to think about an Encore. Muzzleloader barrel and rifle barrel. They do make a factory 25-06 barrel. If your a handloader you can have the chamber reamed for about $40 bucks. You then take standard 25-06 ammo and shoot it. This fire forms the case. Then you take reloading dies that are for an Ackley improved and reload. Turns your 25-06 into a "25-06 Magnum". OTPG members always think this way! Ripper
Re: Which gun?? I like the 243. A wider range of factory ammo if your not loading yourself. Great smaller grain for Coyotes and 90 to 100 grain for whitetail. Will also have less recoil than the 25-06. Some will say you need a 338 Win Mag for everything but a 243 will do just fine. bowana
Re: Which gun?? I just don't favor the .243 for deer sized game. its an argument thats timeless. I look at it like this. The yote won't complain it was shot with something a little too powerful and the deer will go a little less furthur.......comprimise is winning your way!!
