Thought y'all might like this

As a forewarning, there is a hunter bashing comment in this article and i apologize for it's length.

This is from my school newspaper, the Daily Vidette.

Please tell me if i'm wrong in disagreeing with what this guy says throughout the article as he has probably never seen anyone hunt or been out of the city for any period of time confused.gifconfused.gif

Here ya go...

TV is a powerful thing. As I've learned in some classes I took here at good ol' ISU, it validates the things it displays and makes them real to us.

Is there any other way to explain how an entire country can be moved by the death of a horse that cannot speak?

Barbaro was an animal, just like the ants we all squash as kids, or the birds hunters shoot out of the sky, or the chickens we shove down our throats at the dinner table several nights a week.

So why have there been daily updates of his trials and tribulations over the last eight months? Why did SportsCenter lead with news of his death in last night's 5:00 p.m. show? What makes Barbaro special?

If this is where you think I'm going to get sentimental and talk about how he lifted a nation onto his back and how we are indebted to his courage, please go read something else.

Because the only special thing I've seen from him is the fact that, for an afternoon, he ran in a circle much faster than other horses. And keep in mind he was being whipped throughout.

People have tried to make this into a Seabiscuit-like fairy tale, but one chief difference between the stories is that Seabiscuit's took place when horseracing was a huge deal instead of what it is today- an excuse to gamble under the guise of doing something cultured people do.

I mean, if you take out the betting implications, would they even televise the Kentucky Derby? Probably not.

The only people who should be sad about Barbaro are his owners, trainers and others who actually spent time with him. Nobody likes to lose their pet animals, after all (Even I still mourn my goldfish from the first grade that were floating at the top of the bowl the morning after I bought them.)

But for all the everyday Americans that are pretending like they're saddened by Barbaro's death, stop being hypocritical. You still laugh every time an innocent prairie dog is transformed into roadkill or a poor pigeon happens to fly in the way of a Randy Johnson fastball.

Hopefully there will come a day when horses learn English, and then we can talk about what a great horse "Meatloaf in the Oven" or "Lucky Pumpkin Eater" is because of his or her great personality.

If they could speak today, we would know whether or not Barbaro was worth losing tears over, or if he was the Ty Cobb of the horse universe.

And maybe if he were a nice enough guy, I would be saddened by his death. But since we have no way of knowing, I'm not going to lose too much sleep over him.

My long lost goldfish, on the other hand...

Re: Thought y\'all might like this

I guess I should make my point a little clearer

He has never had a relationship w/ something that he had never met.

It's kinda difficult to explain, but how can you just say that about such a great animal. I mean has anyone ever felt for an athlete like Michael Jordan or someone who was great. I mean, when MJ retired, it hurt alot. LOL. The sport went down from there, or Nascar when Dale Sr. died. I never met either of them but I felt like I did.

Hope that helps clarify what I meant.

Hate to disagree with you, but I agree with the article. Animals die everyday, some of them taste pretty darn good, too, and some are put to other uses.

[/ QUOTE ]

my sentiments exactly...however ...when i posted similar sentiments i was chastized as ignorant and other words...(wich by the way i don't care what people say about me) they are animals , not humans ..... get over it already..... mad.gif

Re: Thought y\'all might like this

It's not the fact that animals die, it's the fact that people connected w/ this animal like many people connect with sports figures or other icons. Why is it that people can cry for the loss of a president, but not for the loss of a racehorse. Most people don't meet the pres, and many never met the racehorse, so what gives someone the right to bash people who mourn for the loss of an icon????????????????

I am not bashing you, in your first post you said [ QUOTE ]

Please tell me if i'm wrong in disagreeing with what this guy says

[/ QUOTE ] and I gave you my opinion saying that I disagreed with you and agreed with the article. Just because someone disagrees with your opinion, that doesn't make it bashing.

I am sure there is probably at least one other person who might disagree with me, awww, on second thought probably not, I am always right. grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif
