Michael Irvan in Hall of fame

Guess the NFL doesn't care about morals and character. That is disappointing. frown.gif

How's this for his background:

Irvin pleaded no contest in 1996 to felony cocaine possession. Four years later, he was arrested on drug possession charges, but they were later dropped.

Congrats to Michael Irvin and everyone else who got in. as a player, he deserved to get in. i could care less what he or any other player does off the field...it's their life and none of my business...i watch football for the football, not for the soap opra that everyone turns these players lives into.

Very sad that you don't care if someone is convicted of cocaine use as a professional athlete.

VA, Michael Irvin was still playing in the NLF in 1996 when he plead no contest on the cocaine charge.

Maybe that will change if you have kids and they start following professional sports.

it is sad that you do care about what they do...my life is not effected in anyway shape or form because this guy decided to make a mistake with his life...like i said, i watch it for the football, not for what the people do off the field...and my kids won't be effected by it either, thier lives won't be influenced by an athlete, or at least by what he does off the field or court. they can like him for his on field accomplishments if they want..but other than that, I will be their biggest influence in life

Re: Michael Irvan in Hall of fame

This kinda cracks me up. The NFL sends out it's lawyers yesterday and orders Tony Dungys church in Indy to cancel it's planned superbowl party for the youth or face legal action. Apparently, out of home group viewing is prohibited if you charge a fee. Yet, the bars are allowed to do it. Then today they elect a coke user into the hall of fame. The same guy who was just busted last year for having a crack pipe in his car. What a message they are sending.

as far as his on field perfomances and stats he deserves to be in the NFL Hall of Fame. Definitely not the "Good Citizen" Hall of Fame though.

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree with Todd. In my eyes, the "Good Citizen" HOF is a whole lot more important than the NFL HOF. The guy is cokehead moron, and I'm very surprised he still has a job with ESPN's Sunday NFL countdown...

Re: Michael Irvan in Hall of fame

What keeps the jury out on me is that all of Michael's peers, seem to have the utmost respect for him. Football players and analysts alike.

If Salisbury can respect him even with his colorful police report, that's saying something.

I guess this is one time when I must believe that others know more than me in order to form an opinion. So I'll give Irvin the benefit of the doubt.

BTW--the difference between Rose and Irvin, is that MLB's standards back in Pete's day were very high. When Pete committed his crimes against baseball, the powers that be, Giamatti, decided to ban him for life. A ban for life normally stands, ask Shoeless Joe Jackson fans.

Re: Michael Irvan in Hall of fame

My take:

Michael Irvin was an extremely talented receiver. He was complete. Not exactly a model citizen but as was stated above, he seems to have been well respected by his peers. There are many members of the NFL HOF that have extrmely questionable personal lives. Lawerance Taylor comes to mind here.

I'm on the fence about the morals clause as MLB has. Afterall, the HOF is about on the field performance. If it wasn't there would be many guys in that were HOF'ers in their communities but average on the field.

People always bring up Pete Rose. But betting on baseball was deemed a Cardinal sin when he did it. Not saying doing cocaine is ok.

As far as MLB HOF is concerend it has it's share of less than ideal members.

Ty Cobb was hated by everyone he came in contact with. Mickey Mantle was a fall down drunk but they both performed on the field.

That being said, I have lost ALL repsect for the voters of the NFL HOF when someone with Art Monk's numbers and credentials is repeatedly ignored for HOF enshrinement. He was all the receiver Michael Irvin was and more. But he is continually shrugged aside. WHY??

Hmmm, I'd say you're an aberration there then. You think any other kids look up to athletes and want to emulate them?

Re: Michael Irvan in Hall of fame

c'mon, get over it people, i'm not going to sit here and keep answering your questions...this is the way i feel. do i agree with people doing drugs? no, but i'm not going to live my life complianing and whining about everything these people do and cry and complain because he got into the HOF....big deal...the world isn't going to come to and end because of it!

Re: Michael Irvan in Hall of fame

It's not people, it's me who's asking the questions, and if you don't want to play anymore, I guess that's your perogative, but it makes me think your tenet is tenuous at best. wink.gif

There's nothing to get over, and I think your accusation of us whining is tenuous at best too. I think what others are trying to say that, like it or not, people like Irvin and others in the public eye are held to a higher standard and personally, I don't want my kids to look up to a guy who uses drugs, regardless if he/she is in the NFL or not.

Maybe you'll feel different if and when you have children some day.

Re: Michael Irvan in Hall of fame

after reading all of these posts im not too sure i wanna post on this topic...lol...but i dont agree with the drug use...thats not good at all...and its stupid that just because he is rich and admired by some (less than i thought now..lol) that he should be let go from these accusations....but IN the NFL he was none to be an amazing receiver and some of the softest hands to play the game... I think he deserves the Hall of fame...but thats just me...some think the hall of fame should be based on what you do on and off the field...and i can agree to that to an extent...but he was never actully charged with drug use...and even though he probably did...he was never convicted...this is kind od a sore subject but i think he was an amazing athlete and what he did ON THE FIELD is what should be looked at here.. isee where everyones coming from though with the drug use like i said its a sore subject

Art's Stats:

940 12721 13.5 68

16 years in the league--2 SB wins

Mike's Stats:

750 11904 15.9 65

12 years in the league--2 SB wins

Art has better stats but played 4 extra seasons in the NFL but I do agree--he deserves to be there.

[/ QUOTE ]

Monk was also the receptions leader when he left the game.

There is, to me anyway, NO reason he has been shafted for 7yrs now.
