iron buck
My custom LH 35 Whelen built by Gary Stiles is finally done! And AHEAD of schedule by 4 months! Don't hear that often. Anyway.....he had it on display at a gun show & I took some pictures. He still has a few minor things to do but it is 98% right now. I am more than pleased. The Turkish blank I bought from Ray atkinson turned out very nice. These pictures do not do it justice. I was not able to get many good shots in the tight confines of the show. I will take better ones when I pick it up. All I need to do now is get the rest of the $$$ together. Hopefully by months end so I can bring it home Saw strut & snapper at the show. Had a good time. They got to see this beauty as well! I have another action with him now....it will be a 280.

AJ
Re: Custom 35 Whelen finished! Looks great IB! Can't wait to hear how it shoots. If it shoots anywhere near as good as it looks, you have a winner!
Strut10
Re: Custom 35 Whelen finished! [ QUOTE ] These pictures do not do it justice. [/ QUOTE ] Understatement of the year. This gun is nothing short of a work of art. Truly impressive. Can't believe a guy would even shoot it let alone think of taking it out into the woods to actually hunt with it. Must be a Pittsburgher thing.
Guest Colorado Bob
Re: Custom 35 Whelen finished! Real nice----Sent it out & I'll use it on my WY moose hunt-------then back to Colorado for elk out of the "honey-hole". PS----get that 280 done for my sheep hunt--ok? robk
Re: Custom 35 Whelen finished! my 243 is a turkish action and i love it. i am very happy with it and shoots like a dream. i think a turkish action is the best for a new custom type gun. i woould love to take the other turkish and have someone do the work on it but i am a poor disabled guy. i would lovet o have a 280 built for me. the 280 is another caliber that is on the edge in my opinion and is a great deer and elk gun rob k
iron buck
Re: Custom 35 Whelen finished! Thanks for the congrats all! AJ: Can't wait to shoot it. I have a Leupold VAriX-III 2.5-8x that will go on it. In the pictures you see a Talley removable peep. A "just in case" backup. I will be loading up some 225gr Nosler Ballsitic tips to see how they perform. As well as some 250gr Speer & Hornadys. It will be fun playing this spring. Strut: What do you mean baby it.....you are the one that told me to use it bear hunting next year! But I think that is resolved.....your bears are to big. I will be forced to use my 375HH! BUt this rifle was built to use. No safe queen!! Bob: Good luck on that moose hunt! While the 35 will not make the trek out to Colorado. If you draw that sheep tag the 280 will. I most likely will take my Ruger 300 WM next season & leave it there as my "west gun". Such a hassel taking firearms on flights. And I always worry what is happening to them with the bagage guys....lost ..stoolen..broken etc. Robk The action on my rifle is not Turkish....The stock wood is. It is "Turkish Circassion Walnut" Very dense, tight grained & strong. Not as figured as typical California English, but less prone to warp & it takes checkering better than the other walnuts. The blank for my 280 is about the same as this one. [ QUOTE ] Turkish Circassian Walnut Wood Type: Juglans Regia Native to the Caucusus Mountains Seedling: wild wood, normally uncultivated Color: blond, brown, red, to almost black Weight: varies, from region to region - blank to blank Density: varies from region to region - blank to blank Figure: varies according to type of cut, slab, 1/4 saw, etc. almost all has some faint fiddle back to extreme fiddle back; higher grades exhibit a translucence or inner glow as if there is light from within Stability: extremely good, the best of all walnut Hardness: varies from region to region - blank to blank Workability: the best in the opinion of most stockmakers This is the wood by which all other wood is judged in the stockmaking trade [/ QUOTE ]
