What kind of rifle for my boy?

I was thinking of buying a youth rifle for my boy. I am leaning towards the outfits where you just have to buy barrells rather than buying several guns. CVA and TC have the outfits where you can get a rifle, ML, and shotgun by just changing barrels. I can't spend alot of money, just wondering what ya'll think.

I would look at the H&R 1871 Handi Rifles. They typically give better accuracy than T/C, and they are a whole bunch cheaper to buy, and are a lot better feeling than Rossi. Buy a Handi Rifle for ~$200 and you can shotgun barrels, muzzleloader barrels, and other rifle barrels for very good prices. You cna even get replacement stocks very inexpensively.

My father and I bought my nephew the rossi youth set for his B-Day last year and we can't complain for under $200 it comes with a .22cal. barrel ,a .243 barrel and a 20gaug. barrel. As far as accuracy they are good enough for hunting. About 1 to 2 inch groups.

I'll second the Rossi for a good youth starter. They have some nice little combo's to choose from.

Re: What kind of rifle for my boy?

The wife(a small framed shooter) shoots a savage model 10 in .243 and my daughter(10 years old and kind of small for her age weightwise) shoots a browning a bolt micro hunter in a .243. Both rifles are pretty accurate. Hear a lot of suggestions for the nef, personally I did not like the looks of the gun as much as standard rifles, and wanted my daughters first rifle, a Christmas gift from dad, to be special. Well worth it in my opinion to spend the extra money.

Really the choice is up to you, personally I just did not want to cheap out on a first gun for my kid, even though the nef was a quite capable gun for hunting deer. Will never forget the look on her face when I brought the box that was hidden out after all the other presents were gone that Christmas morning. Priceless was an understatement.

Finally decided on the Rossi 243/20 combo. I hope it was a good choice. I'm not fond of the safety and I figure the trigger is going to be hard to pull, but for the price and his size I believe it was a good choice. He is 7 and killed his first deer (button head) with my 270 in Nov. of 06. He also got him a squirrel with my .22. I'm not sure who is the most excited, him or me.

Another vote for the NEF. I've got two nef guns and one rossi. Nef's customer service is great, rossi's.......not so much. For the price difference and the ability to get new barrels, I would get the NEF hands down.

They probably aren't the nicest looking guns, but they do the job, and I plan on buying one soon in a varmint calibur.

if that doesn't work then i would try an h&r they also have combos and have a great plan for when the youngster grows up the gun will grow up with him, you can send your action in and they will match the new barrel with action and send it back. they have a 32" barrel in 45/70 i want and will do so when i doing better health wise and the barrel is only $106 and then the shipping of course. really pretty cheap for a great gun.

I just took my eight year lod step daughter deer hunting for her first time this year. she shot a nice little six pointer. she shot a 223 h&r ,and i was kinda suprised at the job it done. about a 100 yard shot. the deer went about 20 yards one way about 20 yards the other ,and then it was steaks for supper

Re: What kind of rifle for my boy?

a well placed shot is a sure fire way to eat dinner of back straps for anyone. the 223 uses a 72 gr bullet which is more than enough. for my 243 i shoot an 85 gr bullet and knock them down in place.. they are excellent bullets the tsx from barnes and i believe their bullets in 22 or 23 cal will do the trick just as well. my sisters sister in law shot a nice 8 pointer down in tx and dropped it in it's track using a 55 gr bullet

if you know your equipment you can kill any deer in the good old usa
