The Premonition Buck

While giving my buddy Mike a ride to his stand in my cart, Mike tells me I have a feeling that I’m going to kill a big one today. Now Mike has never in his life killed a mature buck. Matter of fact I could only think of 3 bucks he’s killed in his life in the 10 years I’ve known him. My casual response was “if anyone is due, you sure are”. Mike’s response was “I can’t really explain it but I really feel like I’m going to kill a big one today”. He went on to tell me the premonition of killing a big one conversation he had with his son while they were driving to camp the prior evening.

I dropped Mike off within a couple hundred yards of his stand and went on to mine. About 8:30 that morning I heard Mike shoot. I expected him to call me anytime on the radio but that never happened. A few minutes later I hear Mike shoot again. I’m thinking “what in the world is going on”, so I gave Mike about 30 seconds and I called him on the radio. Mike wishpers back “ I shot at a nice 8 point and he went west and then came back a few minutes later but I know I missed him cutting a limb down with the 2nd shot”. I told him to sit tight and I’d meet him at his stand around 9:30 to look for sign. When I got there Mike was already looking for sign of a hit. Mike showed me the branch he cut down with his 2nd shot. I told Mike to get back in the stand and direct me to the spot where the buck was standing with the radios. While checking around there Mike joined me to search for sign of a hit. There was nothing there so after going through all the circling, etc. procedures to look for any sign both to the west and then east (where he saw the buck go after the 2nd shot) we both came to the realization that he had missed the buck both times.

Now the real intense action begins. I learned a long time ago to never walk around (especially during the rut) without my weapon on me. Mike was about to learn a lesson about that himself. As we are standing there with Mike coming to grips that he missed the buck, a doe came trotting in with a spike right behind her. The spike actually mounted the doe about 35 yards from us with us standing there, no face mask on etc. He dismounted the doe as 2 other bucks approached. They were both 8 points with the lead buck being a legal shooter under our club harvest criteria. I handed Mike my gun but he couldn’t get on the moving buck. They went over the top of a ridge to our right. Mike handed my rifle back dejected over another missed opportunity but I told him we needed to wait a few minutes to see if they would circle back. As we’re facing toward where they went, another doe came in from where the other deer came from with a big, wide 8 point and another rack buck following her. I whispered to Mike “Big Buck” and the big 8 point stopped about 35 yards away behind some bare limbs of a bush as I drew down on him to look him over through my scope. With just a split second to make the decision with the buck stopped, I handed my rifle to Mike again and told him “SHOOT THAT BUCK!!”. As I handed him the gun, the buck walked down on a wide open spur ridge offering Mike a 25 yard broadside shot when he stopped to look at the doe in the opposite direction. The buck then turned his head to look at us and Mike dropped him right there. I like those tracking jobs. We walked over to Mike’s buck and while we are talking and admiring his buck, a 3 point walks up on us and won’t leave. Probably because we are standing in the scent trail all the deer took. Mike turns to me and says “This is like being on TV…if you weren’t here nobody would believe this story”. The young buck wouldn’t leave until I moved to walked up the ridge to go confirm exactly where we were. Mike’s buck has a 19 ½” spread that gross scored 139 ¾. A premonition come true.

Now with Mike’s big one on the ground we radioed Mike’s son to stay in his stand with all the deer movement going on. While we are loading up Mike’s buck into the bed of my cart we hear Mike’s son shoot. Turns out to be a father/son combo 8 point kill morning for them. Here’s Mike and his son with their bucks.
