Strut10
[ QUOTE ] My ultimate big game muzzleloader would be a custom (whoda thunk it) Ruger No. 1 with a 26" Pac-Nor .45 caliber barrel with a 1 in 22" twist. I would be shooting the Barnes TMZ 290 gr bullet being pushed by 10X or VVN120 powder. It should reach 2600 fps with a 290 gr bullet. This combo will also work very well for deer, but I would drop down to a 250 gr SST bullet and use H4198 powder. Again it would reach 2500-2600 fps. [/ QUOTE ] Your fearless leader in all things cocoa advocates his "ultimate big game muzzleloader" burning smokeless powder and turning out stats precisely equivalent to the .375 H&H magnum as working "very well for deer"??????????? Oh.......sorry...........I forgot to mention that he is willing to "drop down" to a .338 Win Mag equivalent load to do his light work. What say ye, AJ??????? Ju got some 'splaining to dooooooo. AJ
Re: SCOPE members.....do you REALLY know AJ???? Yep, its true, I have a couple magnums. I have never hidden that fact. The sweet smokeless ML is along the same lines as my 6mm-06 AI. While its not a magnum, it is faster than any commercial varmint cartridge. My reasoning behind the added performance is now that I live out west where we can see more than a hundred yards in prime hunting country, the boosted performance will extend my shooting distance for the bigger big game. Sure the 100 or 150 gr charges of stinky powder will push a bullet fast enough to do the job on a big elk at 100 yards but its not like this high performance ML will give me a 300 yard setup. The relatively low ballistic coefficient of the .45 caliber bullets dump velocity and energy quickly. In order to have adequate sectional density to ensure proper penetration at 250 yards, the standard setup will not work. So in reality, the little 250 gr bullet has a sectional density of .175 and this so called 338 Win Mag performance combination in reality is more on par with a .308 Winchester with a 150 gr bullet when its compared at 250 yards. And that is a standard cartridge. So, I will stand by my statements. This would be the ultimate big game muzzleloader. Since I chase things bigger than those dinky dog deer on the east coast, it is fitting.

[ QUOTE ] Since I chase things bigger than those dinky dog deer on the east coast, it is fitting. [/ QUOTE ] AJ from 10/25/06: [ QUOTE ] If you look in the dictionary under magnumitis it says: 1. When one believes that somehow a magnum round is always needed to perform a task that a standard round is very capable of. Specifically for black bears. See pic. There are times and places for the big cartridges. I would venture to say that fewer than 10% of hunters that have magnums will be in one of those situations or have the necessary skills to use the benefits of the cartridge. [/ QUOTE ] Me from 11/20 06: [ QUOTE ] Shot this guy this morning at 7:15 A.M. on the first drive. I was a driver. Right at the end of the first leg of a 3-part drive I saw him walking out in front of me. One well-placed shot (about 6" right of the tail) downed him on the spot.......except for a bit of a roll downhill. Live weight was 677 lbs. and dressed at 574 lbs. The skull green scores 21 3/4". [/ QUOTE ] Guess since I'm not hunting those dinky dog bears in the Rockies you may wanna revise your previous position.
AJ
Re: SCOPE members.....do you REALLY know AJ???? Not at all. Actually, I 'll bet your Gentle Ben fell over from all of the junk food it was eating. Hardened arteries and it vapor locked with the magnum blast. I still stand by this statement: [ QUOTE ] There are times and places for the big cartridges. I would venture to say that fewer than 10% of hunters that have magnums will be in one of those situations or have the necessary skills to use the benefits of the cartridge. [/ QUOTE ] If recoil had not thumped your head so much, you would realize that my statement said less than 10% of hunters... That translates to means that some actually do have situations where the magnum is beneficial. If you are looking for me to say your use of a 375 Wby was justified by a fat bear, well...lets say it did the job and you are happy. That's all that counts. Jeramie
Re: SCOPE members.....do you REALLY know AJ???? As the member that mentioned I would be "in the house, sitting in a rocking chair, covered by an afghan" I feel I have the right to voice for the SCOPE foundation.... At SCOPE we do no Discriminate. Our members are more then welcome to own and carry magnums. The simple difference is knowing that we will happily leave the shoulder bruising thunder sticks at home when they are not required. The only true requirement to be a member of scope is actions by intelligencer, not actions by testosterone...... To put that in perspective, sure you can kill a fly with a 2' piece of 2x4 but at scope we prefer to use a fly swatter.....

[/ QUOTE ] That is the purpose Snap. It's just that when you have marshmallow goo clouding your judgment, you have great difficulty in using great authority to accomplish a task. You rather peck and nibble gently around the edges.........hoping to one day succeed.
