Elk Hunt - 2007!

It all started at 3:45 this morning! I got up and finished loading the last few things in my truck! Stopped and filled up with gas, picked up my buddy and we headed out on a depredation hunt for a cow elk.

It was in an area about 50 miles from my house and the higher we climbed, the foggier it got. We missed our turn in the mountains and all of a sudden, we knew we were not headed the right direction. I was able to turn around on a very narrow mountain road with a lot of snow and ice! Made it just fine!

Headed back out and met the landowner and he followed us to where the elk have been eating his haystacks!

We rounded a curve and I had my rifle ready! Tikka 270, 130 grain Hornady Interbond bullets.

I got out of the truck and there were 5 or 6 elk that were about 75 yards from me, but I couldn't shoot because I would have had more than one!

I started to follow a yearling and was going to shoot it in the head. Bad target and decided to pass! Looked further out and there stood this big cow broadside! I came up right behing the front leg and let fly! She took about 2 steps and piled up! Surely DID NOT need anything bigger than the 270 to do the job! I mean dead is dead!!

The landowner helped dress it out and it is at the locker plant right now!

I believe this might be the first elk for 2007! It might also be my last elk, because these old bones just can't handle it anymore!

Anyway, there is going to be a lot of good eating!! laugh.gif

No pictures!! Even if I would have had a camera with me, it was so foggy and overcast I don't think anything would have shown up! I can take some pictures of the meat when I get from the locker plant! LOL!!

This can not be true. Since I've been scanning the net---I've learned that elk have kevlar hides & a lowly 270 does not stand a chance. Now, I read that you used a 20 cent "Hornady" bullet--- smirk.gifsmirk.gif

Can I have a couple of marshmallows in my cup of cocoa.

Conglads on the cow. Nothing like a wapiti for a freezer of good eatin. CB
